The demanding nature of wedding photography and videography makes Sony an easy choice when it comes to picking the best equipment for the job
There are no do-overs with a wedding. That’s what makes capturing every moment so crucial, and why wedding photographers and videographers choose only the most reliable equipment that they can depend on. Sony, in particular, is trusted by discerning professionals who rely on its ecosystem of advanced camera bodies and lenses.
For wedding photographers, there is the Alpha 7R V, which offers a photography experience like no other. This camera combines a 61-megapixel high resolution sensor with AI-based autofocus and eight-stop image stabilisation to make capturing every shot a breeze.

Usability and reliability are givens here as well. The Alpha 7R V boasts a full suite of features including a 4-axis multi-angle screen, continuous shooting at up to 10 frames per second with AF/AE tracking, and a huge RAW image buffer.
Founder of award-winning photography business, Lightedpixels Photography and credited as one of the pioneers of wedding photojournalism in Singapore, Kelvin Koh enthuses: "The Alpha 7R V makes photography a lot easier for both the professional and the hobbyist. I have been using it for the past 6 months and the technological advances Sony has made are pretty amazing especially with the new AI assisted focusing".

Above The Sony FX3
Wedding videographers, on the other hand, will be well-served to take a closer look at the FX3. This video-centric camera represents the entry point into Sony’s Full-frame line of cinema cameras, and comes equipped with many of its siblings’ features while offering a light, portable, and highly manoeuvrable body. For a start, the FX3’s Full-frame sensor offers a high dynamic range with amazing low light sensitivity, which makes capturing the nuance of every scene a breeze regardless of lighting conditions. Sony’s colour science, powerful picture profiles such as the S-Cinetone (that was designed to optimise skin-tones and provide a film-like colour to videos), and 10-bit recording (16-bit raw over HDMI) also makes for extremely flexible colour grading during post processing. Other features that the wedding videographer will appreciate includes the in-built focus breathing compensation* and advanced autofocus.
Leading videographer and founder of FreshfromKenneth, Kenneth Lee says: "Embracing the Sony Cinema Line FX3 instills me with unwavering confidence to deliver exceptional documentaries for weddings and commercial endeavours. I am inspired to unveil my five-year passion project in time to come. This transformative partnership with Sony has expanded my creative possibilities as a documentary filmmaker".

Above The Sony Alpha 7 IV
For hybrid shooters, Sony’s Alpha 7 IV offers the best of both worlds. With a 33-megapixel Full-frame sensor backed by the most crucial photo- and video-centric features, the Alpha 7 IV redefines the “basic” entry within Sony’s Alpha 7 series. A 15-stop dynamic range, real-time tracking autofocus, and focus breathing compensation** are just some features that make this model stand out in a crowded field of hybrid cameras. What’s more, switching between photo and video modes is a cinch too—the dual layer mode dial makes this an easy pick for the wedding hybrid shooter.
Of course, the camera body is just half of the equation; to capture truly stunning images and videos, the lens is just as important. On this front, Sony has a fully-fledged line-up of lenses available. Two of them, in particular, are the perfect candidates for a do-it-all lens, with the choice between them coming down to the exact needs of the photographer or videographer.

Above The Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens
The first is the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens (SEL2470GM2). This follow-up is an upgrade over its wildly successful first-generation predecessor (SEL2470GM) in every way, beginning with its class-leading image quality, which rivals prime lenses. Razor sharp across frame—even wide open—this lens’ resolution is complemented by its superb control of aberrations and beautiful bokeh. The result is a pleasing, true-to-life rendering. What’s more, Sony has fitted the lens with four of its original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors. Together with its floating elements and advanced control, this lens is able to guarantee quick, quiet, and reliable autofocus even for fast moving subjects. Meanwhile, users who prefer to focus manually will also appreciate thie lens’ linear response, which allows for smooth, repeatable focus pulls.
"The SEL2470GM2 is now a lens that I use often. I find it very useful when shooting events and portraits. The lens is versatile and compact. I also love the image quality captured", adds Koh.

Above The Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G lens
The FE 20-70mm F4 G lens (SEL2070G), on the other hand, offers an unprecedented zoom range that is wider than normal standard zoom lenses, from the ultrawide 20mm to the mid-telephoto 70mm. Using just this lens, one is able to capture a wide range of scenes and subjects from expansive interiors to intimate portraits, with the 0.39x maximum magnification also enabling close-ups for endless creative possibilities. Surprisingly, Sony managed to achieve this without sacrificing either brightness or portability; the 20-70mm G lens (SEL2070G) maintains a constant aperture of F4, but weighs just 488 grams. Sony’s acclaimed G Lens image quality is a given here as well, thanks to the implementation of an advanced optical design. Like the SEL2470GM2, SEL2070G uses Sony’s XD Linear Motors—two in this case—for focus. Users can thus also expect fast, reliable autofocus performance that’s switchable to predictable manual focus.
Sony’s focus on making its products the best in the industry is easy to see from how every new release builds on the previous one—often with major revisions and improvements—while also debuting entirely new technologies. Users both established and new can look forward to growing alongside an evolving system of the industry’s best products.
