Touching tributes are pouring in as the Malaysian actress captured the Best Actress prize at the 95th Academy Awards
The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles was filled with loud cheers and applause when Everything Everywhere All at Once was declared the Best Picture, one of seven awards it won at Oscars 2023. This year, Malaysians had vested interest in the ceremony as Michelle Yeoh was up for Best Actress—when her name was announced as the winner, it was a historic moment as she became the first Malaysian ever to win an Oscar.
Her family and close friends organised an exclusive viewing party in Kuala Lumpur that was also attended by her 84-year-old mother Datin Janet Yeoh, to whom she dedicated her Oscar. Others in attendance were Youth and Sports minister Hannah Yeoh, and Women, Family and Community Development minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
Malaysia's prime minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Yeoh's Crazy Rich Asians co-star Henry Golding also took to Instagram to congratulate the newly minted Oscar winner.
