Dearest gentle reader, the new diamond of the season has appeared
The first two seasons of Bridgerton have proven to be worldwide hits since their releases in 2020 and 2022 respectively. The Netflix regency drama remained a favourite and much-talked-about series, with everyone gushing over the romances between Daphne and Simon in season one and Anthony and Kate in season two. Much to the delight of the show's loyal fans, the regency drama was renewed for a third and fourth season back in 2021.
While there is, unfortunately, no updates on the release date for Bridgerton season three, fans may have a new reason to celebrate as a Bridgerton spin-off series is debuting on Netflix soon. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is set to hit the streaming giant on May 4, 2023. Eager to find out more? We spill the tea below.

The spin-off will focus on Queen Charlotte
The iconic character of Queen Charlotte, as the title suggests, will be the protagonist in this series. Going back in time, we see Queen Charlotte as a young German Princess. Beautiful, headstrong, and intelligent, the series highlights Queen Charlotte’s rise to prestige and power.
The role of a young Queen Charlotte will be played by India Ria Amarteifio, an English actress who began her career as a child actress on the West End. Guyanese-British actress Golda Rosheuvel will be reprising her role as Queen Charlotte.
It will be a beautiful, tragic love story
Similar to the main plot line of the main Bridgerton series, this spin-off prequel follows the then Princess Charlotte on her journey to meeting and marrying the young King George III. Their marriage would mark a great societal shift, addressing a possible racial divide and creating the colour-blind society we are familiar with in the original series. Their strong love will be tested by the King’s strongly-held secrets, which is grippingly revealed in the synopsis as an issue that could “shake the very foundations of the monarchy”.
What we already know from the original series is that Queen Charlotte’s husband King George III suffers from a mysterious cognitive illness and only appears briefly in the show. Perhaps Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story will shed some light to this mystery.
Familiar characters will return
Lady Danbury (Andjoa Andoh), Lady Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell), and Queen Charlotte’s loyal attendant Brimsley (Hugh Sachs) will be returning in their respective roles in this series. Fans will also get to see a young Lady Danbury, played by American-born actress Arsema Thomas.
A new face that you should be acquainted with is that of Princess Augusta (Michelle Fairley), King George’s imposing mother who is determined to maintain her family’s power.
A book will be published after the series release
Steering away from the traditional book to movie adaptation, the novel, Queen Charlotte, will be published after the release of the series on Netflix on May 9, 2023. The upcoming novel is written by original Bridgerton author Julia Quinn and American television screenwriter Shonda Rhimes and will take its place among the Bridgerton novel series.
