Taeyong of NCT swapped a navy uniform for arena stages, hip-hop festivals and a chart-topping solo era—all before turning 31
Military service often imposes a pause on even the most carefully constructed careers. For Taeyong, however, the transition back to civilian life was remarkably brief. The NCT leader and one of the defining figures of SM Entertainment’s experimental idol ecosystem was discharged from the Korean Navy in December 2025, and within days, plans for his return were already taking shape.
What followed was not a gradual reintroduction but a period of sustained activity: an Asia tour, a high-profile international collaboration, his first full-length solo album and a run of festival appearances that showcased different facets of Taeyong. For an artist who spent more than a decade helping shape the sound and identity of NCT and NCT 127 before establishing himself as a soloist with Shalala and Tap, the months after his discharge felt less like a comeback than the continuation of a trajectory already in motion. As Taeyong turns 31 on July 1, here is how he spent the first chapter of his post-military career.

‘TY Track – Remastered’ tour: an immediate post-discharge Asian takeover
Above Taeyong kicks off his comeback era with the 'TY Track - Remastered' Asia tour
Just two days after his discharge, SM Entertainment confirmed Taeyong’s 2026 Asia tour, TY Track – Remastered. Rather than starting from scratch, the tour rebuilt his 2024 TY Track concert with elevated staging and a longer setlist. From January to April, he played Seoul, Jakarta, Yokohama, Macau, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, previewing unreleased tracks from his then-upcoming album. More than a comeback, it was a statement: there would be no cooling-off period.
‘Rock Solid’ pre-release: a heavy-hitting hip-hop collaboration
Above Taeyong teams up with Anderson .Paak for the hard-hitting single 'Rock Solid'
On April 17, Taeyong released Rock Solid, a pre-release single featuring Grammy-winning artist Anderson .Paak and produced by Dem Jointz, known for shaping NCT 127’s signature sound. The track’s punchy drums and defiant hook gave Taeyong a platform to assert his hip-hop credibility ahead of his album drop. After a long time away from the music scene, Rock Solid swaggered back into view, reminding fans exactly why he’d been missed.
‘Wyld’ studio album: a feral, record-breaking solo return
Above Taeyong unleashes his debut studio album 'Wyld' with a genre-bending sound
Taeyong’s first full-length album, Wyld, arrived in May, spanning hip-hop, jazz, rock, electronic, hyperpop and future bass across ten tracks. He took on writing and production duties himself, channelling two years of pent-up creative instinct into the record. The album topped iTunes charts in multiple regions and became one of the most engaged solo releases of his career, marking a clear evolution from his earlier EPs, Shalala and Tap.
Historic ‘Music Bank’ win: Taeyong’s first solo trophy
Above Taeyong receives his first-ever solo win on 'Music Bank'
On May 29, Taeyong claimed his first-ever solo music show win, beating Itzy’s Motto on KBS’s Music Bank. For a male soloist competing against girl-group streaming powerhouses, the win was no small feat. Visibly surprised by the result, Taeyong thanked his NCT members, his label and his parents—a candid moment that marked a milestone in his solo career and reflected the support behind his comeback.
Seoul Jazz Festival: stripped-down musicality and live band synergy
Above Taeyong, with fellow NCT member Haechan, trades backing tracks for a live band at Seoul Jazz Festival
At the 18th Seoul Jazz Festival in May, Taeyong ditched his usual AR-heavy production for a full live band set. He reworked Rock Solid, Tap and Misfit with raw instrumentation, then closed with a surprise reunion alongside fellow NCT member Haechan (Lee Dong-hyuck) for a unit performance of Pado. It was a rare chance to watch Taeyong lead with musicianship alone, no choreography required.

Rapbeat 2026: cementing street credibility in the pouring rain
Above Taeyong braves the rain for a hip-hop set at Rapbeat 2026
In June, Taeyong took the Rapbeat stage alongside hip-hop heavyweights like Jay Park and Zico, a line-up historically sceptical of idol rappers. Performing Storm, Hot and Wyld through heavy rain, he leaned into the chaos rather than fighting it. The drenched, high-intensity set went viral for good reason: it dismantled any lingering doubt about his authenticity as a rapper, not just a performer.
Waterbomb Seoul: a viral summer rite of passage on Team Green
On July 26, Taeyong takes the Waterbomb Seoul stage as part of Team Green, stepping into a festival long treated as a rite of passage for idols shedding their tightly controlled image. Following a year of underground hip-hop sets and jazz reinventions, Waterbomb gives Taeyong a louder, looser platform: bass-driven tracks, a drenched crowd and the kind of viral fancam moment that reaches far beyond his existing fanbase.
SBS Gayo Daejeon Summer: a return to the K-pop mainstream
Taeyong closes out his summer run at the 2026 SBS Gayo Daejeon Summer on August 9, sharing the Kintex stage with Ateez, Zerobaseone, Riize and NCT Wish. After months proving his range across underground hip-hop and stripped-down jazz stages, the broadcast format brings him full circle—back among his peers, and back at the centre of the idol ecosystem he helped shape.
