From doomed palace romances to supernatural attraction, these dark romance C-dramas turn love into something obsessive, dangerous and impossible to resist
There is something uniquely dangerous about falling in love in a C-drama. The person you’re drawn to might be your sworn enemy, the one who destroyed your family, a future tyrant, an undercover assassin or, in the case of Affinity, someone whose attraction to you is written into his biology. Dark romance works particularly well in Chinese dramas because familiar romantic tropes can quickly become more complicated when desire is tangled up with power, secrets or obsession.
The 2026 hit Affinity may have brought darker C-drama romance back into the spotlight, but it is hardly the first to make love feel like a dangerous proposition. From doomed palace romances and supernatural fantasies to revenge thrillers and short-form melodramas, these dark romance C-dramas assert that sometimes the most compelling love stories are the ones that come with a warning label.
In case you missed it: Why ‘Affinity’ is one of the weirdest—and most addictive—C-dramas of 2026
1. ‘Affinity’ (2026)
Above What if your feelings aren’t entirely your own?
What makes Affinity so strange is that its central romance comes with a biological explanation.
Wu Nongyu (Fang Jin), a graduate student in genetic engineering, crosses paths with Xie Xinxu (Cui Yuxin), a mysterious man connected to a murder case. Five years later, he deliberately re-enters her life disguised as a medical professor. The reason for his fixation is even stranger: the fictional Affinity virus has two types, A and B, and B-type carriers can develop an intense, almost uncontrollable attraction to A-type carriers.
Suddenly, the usual questions of a romance drama—Do they like each other? Is the chemistry real? Should they be together?—become considerably harder to answer.
Xinxu’s possessiveness isn’t simply a personality quirk. It’s intertwined with the fictional biology governing their attraction, giving the relationship an unsettling ambiguity. Affinity turns the familiar dark-romance fantasy of being irresistibly drawn to someone into something much more literal.
What makes Affinity unique compared to other dark romance C-dramas? The danger isn’t merely the man. It’s the possibility that the attraction itself has been engineered.
2. ‘Story of Kunning Palace’ (2023)
Above Xie Wei is not exactly the man you’d recommend to a friend
Jiang Xuening (Bai Lu) gets a second chance at life after the power-hungry woman she once was meets a brutal end. In her new timeline, she intends to stay away from the palace—and particularly from Xie Wei (Zhang Linghe), the imperial tutor whose actions were tied to the catastrophe of her previous life.
Naturally, that plan doesn’t last. Story of Kunning Palace is particularly effective as a dark romance because Jiang Xuening isn’t an innocent wandering into danger. She knows exactly what Xie Wei is capable of. He knows she is hiding things, too. Their relationship develops inside a constant negotiation of secrets, political manoeuvring and mutual suspicion.
The attraction feels less like a wholesome discovery and more like watching two exceptionally intelligent people realise that the person who can actually understand them may also be the person who can destroy them.
For a romance built around second chances, it has an unusually good understanding of why some people are impossible to stay away from.
3. ‘Goodbye My Princess’ (2019)
Above Some love stories don’t need a villain. They just need ambition
Qu Xiaofeng (Peng Xiaoran) falls for Gu Xiaowu (Chen Xingxu), a seemingly ordinary tea merchant who is actually the fifth prince, Li Chengyin. His affection for her is real. Unfortunately, so is the ruthless political calculation behind their relationship. He uses her trust to advance his imperial ambitions, ultimately betraying her family and devastating her homeland.
That contradiction is the entire point.
Goodbye My Princess doesn’t make the relationship dark simply by giving its male lead a cruel streak. Li Chengyin genuinely loves Xiaofeng while simultaneously doing things that make that love impossible to reconcile with his actions.
It’s melodrama at its most merciless: the more you understand why these two people love each other, the harder it becomes to imagine how that love can save them.
4. ‘Till the End of the Moon’ (2023)
Above Saving the world would be easier if the future Devil God weren’t your husband
Li Susu (Bai Lu) travels 500 years into the past with one very specific mission: prevent Tantai Jin (Luo Yunxi) from awakening as the ancient Demon God and destroying the three realms. Unfortunately, she discovers that her historical mission has placed her inside a volatile marriage with him.
Till the End of the Moon turns the enemies-to-lovers formula into something existential. Tantai Jin isn’t merely morally grey; his future self represents total cosmic annihilation. Li Susu therefore has every reason to distrust him—and every reason to remain close enough to understand his pain.
The romance becomes a battle between fate and choice. If someone is destined to become a monster, does loving him help change that fate, or does it make the inevitable more devastating?
5. ‘My Journey to You’ (2023)
Above In this mountain valley, falling in love is practically a security breach
Yun Weishan (Yu Shuxin) arrives at the fortified Gong residence with a mission rather than a romantic agenda. She is an undercover assassin sent by the Wufeng organisation to infiltrate the family, where she crosses paths with Gong Ziyu (Zhang Linghe), the rebellious young master suddenly thrust into leadership.
The resulting romance is almost gothic. The residence is beautiful but claustrophobic; everyone is watching everyone else; and the woman at the centre of the story has entered the household under false pretences.
That makes every moment of intimacy slightly suspect.
Does Yun Weishan care for Gong Ziyu because she has fallen for him, or because their relationship is her only route to the freedom she has spent her life pursuing? My Journey to You makes trust feel like a luxury nobody in the house can afford.
6. ‘The Double’ (2024)
Above Xue Fangfei didn’t come back for romance. She came back for revenge
Xue Fangfei (Wu Jinyan) is betrayed by her husband and left buried alive. She survives by taking on the identity of Jiang Li, the chief minister’s daughter who saved her, and sets out to reclaim justice and expose the corrupt elite responsible for destroying her life. Xiao Heng (Wang Xingyue), the formidable Duke of Su, becomes her most dangerous ally.
The romance is almost an accidental by-product of the revenge plot. Fangfei isn’t waiting around to be rescued; she has a mission, an identity to maintain and a long list of enemies who need to answer for their crimes. Xiao Heng is drawn to her sharp intellect and resilience, using his power to assist her moves.
The relationship gives The Double a refreshing brand of dark romance: love doesn’t derail the revenge story; it becomes the engine carrying it forward.
7. ‘The Prisoner of Beauty’ (2025)
Above Nothing says romance quite like marrying the enemy for political survival
Xiao Qiao (Song Zuer) and Wei Shao (Liu Yuning) begin their relationship with every reason to distrust one another. Their marriage is a political alliance between rival clans with a long history of bloodshed and betrayal.
This isn’t like other dark romance C-dramas where one character is secretly unhinged. Its tension comes from power.
Xiao Qiao has to navigate a hostile household where her allegiances are questioned, while Wei Shao has his own reasons for being wary of her family’s past betrayals. Their attraction develops alongside the gradual realisation that the enemy standing opposite you may be the only person who truly understands what you are trying to survive.
8. ‘Maid’s Revenge’ (2022)
Above Revenge, a dangerous master and a romance that has absolutely no interest in taking things slowly
Dong Tingyao (Chen Fangtong) is forced into the role of a maid after her family is slaughtered. The man she has to serve is Fang Tianyi (Dai Gaozheng), the ruthless Republican-era warlord she believes is responsible for her father’s death—a belief that turns out to be wrong.
It is not subtle—and that is part of its appeal.
Maid’s Revenge compresses the ingredients of a sprawling revenge melodrama into a short-form C-drama: secret identities, family betrayal, power struggles and enemies whose mutual obsession burns through the screen. Rather than a psychological slow burn, it is high-octane melodrama with the accelerator permanently pressed down.

9. ‘My Lethal Man’ (2023)
Above The worst time to discover you have a doppelgänger is right before a dangerous stranger claims you’re his fiancée
Shen Man-ning (Li Mozhi) encounters her wealthy doppelgänger, Zhuang Xinyan, during an unexpected kidnapping. Xinyan’s tragic death pulls Man-ning into an entirely new identity—and into the orbit of Yan Xingcheng (Fan Zhixin), an enigmatic man who forces her to assume the role of his fiancée to protect a family empire.
The relationship begins with coercion and mutual suspicion rather than tenderness.
Man-ning is thrown into intense corporate warfare she doesn’t understand, while Xingcheng harbours deep secrets about her identity and an unsolved mystery stretching back 17 years. As hostility gradually transforms into reliance, My Lethal Man delivers a gripping combination of modern suspense and possessive dark romance.
10. ‘A Familiar Stranger’ (2022)
Above Sometimes the biggest romantic complication is that you’re married to someone who technically isn’t herself
What sets A Familiar Stranger apart from other dark romance C-dramas is how it draws dark-romance tension from deception and identity theft rather than sheer brutality.
Shi Qi (Ke Ying), a talented painter, becomes trapped in a scheme concocted by Shen Qin (Song Zhaoyi), the prime minister’s daughter. A mystical face-swapping plot leaves Shi Qi married to general Xiao Hansheng (Cheng Lei) under Shen Qin’s identity, while Shen Qin assumes Shi Qi’s appearance to escape an unwanted marriage.
The dynamic is made richer because Xiao Hansheng and Shi Qi crossed paths years earlier. He doesn’t recognise the altered face before him, but he quickly notices that his new wife’s soul feels familiar, sparking suspicion while the truth remains buried.
At just 18 short episodes, A Familiar Stranger demonstrates that a sharp, twisty C-drama romance doesn’t require dozens of episodes to deliver compelling romantic suspense.
