This Valentine’s Day, love birds Danna Er and Vikna Rajah share their advice and wisdom on keeping the spark alive

For some, Valentine’s Day conjures images of heart-shaped candies, forced romantic gestures and the pressure to have the “perfect” date. For others, it’s a gentle nudge to pause and appreciate the little moments that enrich their lives each day.

To commemorate the romantic occasion, we needn’t look far for inspiration thanks to the many couples within our Tatler community who remind us that love resides in these simple moments.

In this story, we turn to Danna Er and Vikna Rajah—a power couple in Singapore’s legal industry. The duo tied the knot in 2019, in a two-part wedding extravaganza in Singapore and Bali.

Chance led them to meet at a dinner party in Sentosa back in 2017. As Vikna tells us: “We weren’t even supposed to meet!”

He was meant to attend a Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) concert but ended up at said dinner party due to last-minute changes.

“I was there with my friend who is also a lawyer but we were surrounded by bankers. When I found out Vik was also a lawyer, I went over to say ‘hello’,” Er explains. The attraction between the two was evident from the start. Vikna, an equity partner at Rajah & Tann, asked her out the very next week and as they say: the rest is history.

Er, a partner at Eldan Law, shares that at the beginning, they were both immersed in their demanding careers, working from 9 am to 11 pm on most days. Fortunately, their schedules aligned perfectly. “I’d meet her after work and drive her home, no matter how late it was,” Vikna says. The duo also made it a point to travel together whenever possible, leading to memorable trips around the world from Bali to Sri Lanka.

They’ve come a long way since the early days of courting each other. Looking back, Vikna reflects: “Love is about putting the other person first. It requires kindness, patience and understanding above all.”

Below, the love birds share their journey, lessons learnt and their advice on keeping the spark alive.

What were your initial impressions of each other?
Vikna Rajah (VR): I thought she was incredibly beautiful. When I learned she was not only a lawyer but also a Dean’s Lister from the National University of Singapore with a Master’s from Columbia University, I was deeply impressed.

Danna Er (DE): Vik struck me as intelligent, driven and charming. And he has a wonderful voice, too.

What are your favourite things to do together?
VR: Spending quality time with our daughter—she’s technically a toddler, but she’ll always be our baby. Weekends at playgrounds and cafés are the highlight of our week.

DE: I agree—those moments are so precious. We also love chatting about life, watching movies together and recently, playing Bananagrams!

What’s the ultimate indicator of a healthy relationship?
VR: The sheer joy of being in each other’s company.

DE: Open communication—being able to share your thoughts and feelings candidly.

How do you keep the spark alive?
VR:
We prioritise a regular date night and make time for a couple’s trip once a year, often tying it in with a celebration like a friend’s wedding or anniversary.

DE: We also keep things exciting by discovering new restaurants and planning family adventures together.

What’s your favourite date night activity?
VR: A cosy evening at a café, followed by a movie.

DE: Yes, it’s so calming and therapeutic, helping us to unwind together.

What’s your advice for young couples?
VR: Choosing a life partner is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. Beyond love and attraction, ensure you are aligned as partners with shared goals, ambitions, and values.

DE: Exactly—choose wisely. A shared vision, both in your personal and professional lives, is key to building a fulfilling partnership.
