Sutton Foster may be making headlines for her connection to Hugh Jackman, but she's an icon in her own right. Here's why this Broadway star continues to captivate audiences on and off the stage
Sutton Foster may be making headlines these days for dating Hugh Jackman, but she’s an accomplished woman on her own. For instance, she’s a two-time winner of the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical: first in 2002 as Millie Dillmount in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and again in 2011 as Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes. She also has nods from Drama Desk and Drama League, as well as nominations from the Grammys and the Lawrence Olivier Awards.
So, you can see, Foster is hardly one-note. Here are some other things to know and admire about this Broadway star.

1. Sutton Foster is a triple threat
Foster has been a performer since she was a kid, competing on Star Search and even auditioning for the Mickey Mouse Club with JC Chasez. Acting and singing are a given, but she’s a terrific dancer, too. Her tap number for the Anything Goes finale impresses even non-dancers. She started ballet at four and also starred in the short-lived dance-themed series Bunheads.
2. She loves crafting
If Foster weren't an actress, she’d probably own an Etsy shop to sell her homemade crafts. She details in her memoir, Hooked: How Crafting Saved My Life, published in October 2021, how crocheting, collaging, and cross-stitching help get her through both milestones and challenging times. She crocheted a blanket during her divorce from her first husband Christian Borle, made baby blankets when awaiting the arrival of her daughter, and created an albino octopus toilet paper wrapper for costar Hilary Duff’s wedding.
3. She adopted a baby girl
The 49-year-old adopted a baby girl in 2017 with then-husband Ted Griffin. In one interview, she said, “It's been an unbelievably beautiful experience…You go into life and you think, 'How am I going to have a family?' Not only do I have a daughter, but I have a whole other family that is part of her story."
4. Foster doesn’t want to write or direct
Many actors eventually expand their roles in the industry after the acting bug has worn off, but not Foster. In one interview, she says, “I don’t think I want the power or the control to be the writer or director.” It comes as no surprise because she also confessed that she has an “antisocial gene.” That said, she isn’t closing her doors on producing.
5. She sticks up for what she likes
In 2014, Foster guested on the show Say Yes to the Dress to pick out a gown for her wedding to Griffin. She fell in love with a swishy Pnina Tornai number that her friends picked apart for resembling a napkin. After trying on numerous other frocks, she decided to stick to what she liked regardless of other people’s opinions.
