How Wakanda took over Hollywood and the Internet!
The 2019 Oscar nominations were announced yesterday, and there’s one movie that the world has been keeping its eyes on. Yes, Black Panther. This blockbuster Marvel superhero film has been trending for days since the official announcement of 2019 Oscar nominations broke to the Internet. And if you’re wondering why everybody is freaking out about the movie and its Oscar nominations, here we give you the reasons. Wakanda forever!
First superhero movie
Black Panther has officially made history as the first superhero-themed movie to be nominated for an Oscar. Actually before Black Panther, there were a few superhero movies that were hoping to earn Best Picture like The Dark Knight (2012) and Wonder Woman (2017), but it’s Black Panther that got the chance to bring the Oscar trophy to Wakanda.
Earn seven nominations
Alongside with Best Picture, Black Panther earned six more nominations in Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score, Best Original Song and Best Production Design. Phew.. We’re speechless.
First black designer to earn Best Production Design
Another piece of history made by Black Panther was on the production set. Hannah Beachler, the designer of Wakanda’s set, has become the first black production designer to be nominated in the Best Production Design by the Academy. Fun fact: she designed Béyonce’s hit album, Lemonade.
First rap music for Best Original Song
Kendrick Lamar must be smiling from ear to ear now. Alongside with his 12 Grammy nominations, his song for Black Panther is also nominated for the Best Original Song. Kendrick’s “All The Stars” is nominated alongside five other songs. The rapper may bring home Grammys and perhaps he can add an Academy award to his cabinet, too.
Breaks the #OscarsoWhite stereotype
The hashtag #Oscarsowhite has risen since the 2017. The Academy was criticised for the lack of nominations for people of colour from year to year. But, this year seems like the Oscar will see more colours and diversities. Not only Black Panther, another critically acclaimed film, Blackkklansman, also earned six nominations.
