These Filipino artists put their creativity to the test using an unexpected canvas
The 6th edition of the Hatch exhibit debuted last March 8 at The Manila Hotel, in collaboration with Manila Bulletin, showcasing fresh creativity within the iconic spaces of Manila’s “grand dame of hotels”. The exhibition challenged Filipino artists to express themselves and paint their message on a unique canvas—a fibreglass egg. Previous editions of Hatch showcased the creativity and ingenuity of artists using whimsical colours and exotic designs and this year is no different—using everyday materials and infusing them into the egg to create masterpieces.

“It’s a challenge I’ve never done before, mang-itlog (lay an egg), pero (but) why not? This octogenarian would like to remain innovative, even in his twilight years. So roll out your MB [Manila Bulletin] egg up to Baguio—and let’s see how my fantasy fertilises this egg,” Kidlat Tahimik, National Artist for Film, shared in an email when invited to join this year’s Hatch.
With a new generation of artists paired with some of the scene’s most prominent present to showcase the genius of Filipino artistry, Hatch fosters a vibrant community of enthusiasts, artists, and the public to provide a unique perspective on creativity. Furthermore, the exhibit offers a platform for local artisans—emerging and established—to experiment and push their imaginative boundaries. Featured artists include National Artist of the Philippines for Film Kidlat Tahimik, Marcel Antonio, Melai Arguzon, Andre Chan, Elaine Clemente, Katrina Cuenca, Sean Go, Julie Lluch, Marlon Magbanua, Glenn Martinez, Dennis Montera, Bea Policarpio, Joel Reglos, Maxine Syjuco, Herminio Tan, Valerie Teng, and Manila City Vice Mayor John Marvin “Yul Servo” Nieto.
HATCH 6th Edition is on display at the Grand Lobby of The Manila Hotel until April 7. Admission is free.
