For those who knew the late Kwek Leng Joo, the deputy chairman of City Developments Limited was two things: a philanthropist and an avid photographer with a passion for nature. He found a kindred spirit in China-born painter Lin Lu Zai and this led to a year-long collaboration for Soul & Sensibilities, an exhibition of 40 artworks that married Kwek’s modern-day photography with Lin’s traditional Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. President Tony Tan Keng Yam opened the exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore in October and $550,000 was raised from the sale of three artworks as well as commemorative art books signed by the president. Proceeds went towards the President’s Challenge 2015, which helps the less fortunate. Members of the Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135 also presented six floral arrangements inspired by the artworks.
