The exhibition at the international contemporary art show, La Biennale di Venezia, will feature works by Yeung, who specialises in botanic sculptures, and will be co-organised by M+ museum
Artist Trevor Yeung has been selected to represent Hong Kong at the 60th edition of the La Biennale di Venezia, or Venice Biennale, one of the most important contemporary art forums in the world. The exhibition will be curated by M+ museum’s Olivia Chow, and supported by M+ and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
Best known for working with plants, Yeung creates botanic sculptures and installations inspired by human interactions and emotions. His mixed media works—comprising carefully staged objects, photographs, animals and plants—are often metaphorical projections of his own feelings and social experiences.
In a statement, Doryun Chong, deputy director, curatorial, and chief curator, M+, noted that Yeung’s emotional imposition on everyday items like plants evokes “poignant senses of tenderness and fragility that resonate deeply with his audiences”, adding that the work “speaks very much to our time and sensibilities”.

Yeung joins a line-up of successful local artists who have exhibited in the last five editions of the Biennale, including Samson Young and Angela Su. He has participated in numerous local and international exhibitions, had a solo exhibition at the Jan Mot gallery in Brussels this May, and has an upcoming solo exhibition at Gasworks, a non-profit contemporary art institution in London.
He will be creating an entirely new body of work for the site-specific exhibition in Venice; the event will be held between April 20 and November 24 next year. In the press release accompanying the news, Yeung said, “As the world adjusts to the re-opening of borders and new ways of interaction after the pandemic, it is particularly meaningful for me to present new work influenced by cross cultures and my immediate surroundings—to bring my vision abroad and connect with the international art community.”
