Meet the star-studded cast of 9 Works Theatrical’s ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’
Tick, Tick… Boom!, the earlier work of Jonathan Larson who created the critically acclaimed musical Rent, follows the story of Jon, a musical composer who’s struggling to find his true calling as he turns 30. Loosely based on Larson’s personal life, Tick, Tick... Boom! navigates Jon’s life of composing a seminal work while juggling his relationship with his girlfriend, Susan, a dancer who teaches ballet to “wealthy and untalented children.” The show also introduces Michael, Jon’s best friend who abandoned his artistic passion to pursue a corporate career.
Together, the three face uncertainty as they grapple with the thought of what could be and what should be.

Khalil Ramos and Jef Flores as Jon

Making his theatre debut is GMA actor and personality, Khalil Ramos. As a creative himself—a photographer, aspiring film director and content creator—Khalil’s creative spirit perfectly matches Jon’s. “I could relate so much to Jon, especially. Practicality versus passion is something that I keep questioning myself. And I was cornered by that during the pandemic. We had to choose practicality during those tough times, but I kept choosing practicality because I felt that my passion was slowly slipping away.” shared Ramos.
Alternating Khalil is multi-awarded actor, Jef Flores, who will be reprising his role as Jon from 9 Works Theatrical’s minimalist 2016 production of the said musical. With notable productions like Disney’s Newsies and Eto Na! Musikal nAPO! He was awarded the Philstage Gawad Buhay Best Actor for his performance in This is Our Youth and for his lead performance in the last iteration of Tick, Tick… Boom! Much like Jon, Jef is also a musical composer who writes dance music for Galaw.Co Dance Theater.

Playing the role of Susan is Kayla Rivera, a TV and musical theatre performer, radio DJ, recording artist, host, model and more all in one! A masterful singer that bagged top spots in competitions like David Foster’s Star Search and ABS-CBN’s Star Power, Kayla was also awarded Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her role as Asenath in Joseph the Dreamer.
Her alternate is another returning cast member, Tanya Mañalang, who first played Susan in the 2016 production of Tick, Tick… Boom! The award-winning actress made the country proud when she was handpicked to play the role of Kim in the West End production of Miss Saigon. Other works you probably know her for are Rak of Aegis, All Out of Love and Ang Huling El Bimbo.

Taking the role of Michael is the most popular theatre actor in his generation, Reb Atadero, who starred in many theatrical productions. As a singer, host, voice actor, director, content creator and Gawad Buhay Nominee for multiple categories, Reb has truly made a name for himself in the industry. You probably best know him for his roles in Ang Huling El Bimbo, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Graduate, and most recently in, Sandbox Fest 2023’s Lungs.
Commercial model, international performer, and TV and film actor, Vien King will be alternating Reb. Vien has garnered many awards such as Best Actor in a Musical by the LEAF Awards in 2019 and the Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards in 2020 and was among the eight Filipino artists who were chosen to be part of Disney in Concert: Live Your Dream in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Above Tick, Tick... Boom! Team
It’s exciting to see the dynamic between the cast members. To that end, director Robbie Guevara and the team said the musical will not have a fixed set of actors. Audiences can expect a fresh experience every time as the cast will be mixed and matched to show the amount of chemistry the actors have with each other. With themes of peer pressure, social anxiety, adulthood, and more, Guevara believes that Larson’s famed work will surely resonate with today’s generation of Filipino audiences despite being set in ’90s-era New York.
Tick, Tick… Boom! is showing on all weekends of August 2023 at 3:00 PM and 7:30 PM at the CPR Auditorium, RCBC Plaza in Makati. Tickets are available via ticket2me.net.
