You’ve seen it in the cinemas and marvelled at the talents of Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried – should you even catch the live musical? Read on to find out if Mamma Mia! is actually worth the splurge
Entering The Theatre at Solaire, you can already feel the anticipation in the air – Mamma Mia! is familiar to anyone who’s seen the film – yet, I found myself still incredibly excited to see live musical. First staged in 1999 (written by Catherine Johnson), the musical features renditions of famous ABBA songs alongside original compositions by ABBA member, Benny Andersson.
The story is as quirky as the music that carries it through. Lead character, Sophie Sheridan, is about to be wed in an idyllic island in Greece where she was raised by her steadfast and eccentric mother, Donna. As the wedding draws closer, Sophie finds herself longing to be given away by her father whom she’s never met or known.
Having read her mother’s journal, she realises that she has three potential fathers – all of whom she invites to her wedding, in the hopes that whoever showed up would be the one to walk her down the aisle. Lo and behold, all three show up on the island – Sam, Bill, and Harry – all-eager to see their old flame, Donna.
