You may know about art, but do you know how to behave while looking at it?
Our editors here at Indonesia Tatler love art and art-related activities, like visiting new galleries around town and attending the latest museum exhibitions. However, with the latest surge in art euphoria, which we think is a good thing, we have also noticed a rise in bad etiquette spotted at art venues. With this in mind, we thought that we would to help you by compiling the an etiquette guide that you should adhere to when visiting galleries and museums.
Do: Focus on the art

It’s quite simple, really. You visit an art gallery or museum to appreciate the artworks being presented there. Do spend some time gazing at the art and installations. Sit and marvel at the themes and symbolisms. As Pablo Picasso once said: “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”
Don’t: Touch the art!

It happened to me a few times. I was invited to an exhibition opening night that was crammed with distinguished guests from all walks of life, and I witnessed it: “They touched the art”. Now, I understand the impulse to poke or rubbing the artworks—they are breathtaking to look at. However, do keep in mind that most artworks are fragile and can be damaged by harmful oils from our hands that will lessen the artwork’s life expectancy. Art needs to be preserved for future generations. Furthermore, please do not touch, or, God forbid, hug any artwork or installation. Spare yourself the embarrassment, please.

Do: Ask questions

Art is open to interpretation, but if you find yourself with questions, then don’t hesitate to ask staff members about the artworks. They are there to help you. Don’t worry: they don’t bite!
Don’t: Ignore photography rules

This is inevitable. With the dominance of social media, posting an Instagram picture in front of artwork is a cool thing to do: we get it. However, do keep in mind that there are several photography rules one needs to follow. First, do not use a camera flash because the bolt of light from your camera could actually destroy materials in the artworks, especially with older pieces. Second, do not, under any circumstances, bring a selfie stick since it’s very distracting for other visitors and dangerous for the artworks around you. Last, but not least, there is no point in taking a million pictures if you don’t experience the art while you are there. Post your Instagram pictures later—the world can wait.
Do: Research first

Researching an artist or exhibition beforehand is useful for all of us. This way, you will already know which one you want to look at, and it will allow you to engage with the artwork on a much deeper level. Read the artist’s bio and look at his or her previous works—it’s fun!
Don’t: Block the art

We visit art galleries and museums to enjoy the art, so it should be wise to know your manners, especially in a crowded space. I have seen this numerous times: one person will stare at one painting for a seriously long time without a care in the world. We know you love the art, but taking a few steps back won’t hurt. Let other visitors have their chance to enjoy the artwork as well. Also, it’s never cool to crowd any artwork as it can put the paintings in danger.
