Here are all the artworks and exhibitions to see at galleries around Kowloon district

March is art month in Hong Kong, and the city’s cultural scene has collectively put it best foot forward. With coronavirus restrictions eased at last, internationally renowned artists, curators, and collectors are flying into the special administrative region for Art Basel and Art Central, as well as to see some local cultural action. This is also coinciding with all sorts of venues opening new exhibitions this month, including galleries, museums, and art spaces.

With so much happening and so many shows and exhibitions to see, you may be wondering what’s most worth your time to visit. So we’ve organised Tatler’s top picks by district, and here are the ones you should check out in Kowloon.

Japanese wig artist Tomihiro Kono and multidisciplinary artist Sayaka Maruyama are staging Fancy Creatures: The Art of the Wig at independent art space Current Plans, their first presentation in Hong Kong. Their whimsical, vibrant designs and fantastical installations translate human, animal and plant motifs into sculptural, wearable hair art. The duo create everything from scratch: from drawings of their unique designs to the hand-dyeing, weaving and finally fashioning the hair into surreal works of art.

Guangzhou collective Boloho has transformed Hanart TZ’s sprawling Kwai Hing gallery into a cha chaan teng, creating an environment which will feature paintings, texts, installations, hand-sewn works, and even a series of mini-sitcoms. This project, Bolohope (2022), is an iteration of its presentation at last year’s Documenta Fifteen in Kassel, Germany, where it turned a factory cafeteria into Hong Kong style café. The group is also set to present two site-specific live performances at the gallery during art week. Founded in 2019 in an old residential neighbourhood in central Guangzhou, Boloho’s name is Cantonese for “jackfruit core”, reflecting the idea that that while the core of the fruit is often thrown away, it is actually a delicacy in its own right.

Dates: 18 February - 6 April 2023

Using textile and crafts as a point of departure, Clouds, Power and Ornament explores Central Asia’s complex interconnectivity, history and persisting artistic traditions. The exhibition is curated by CHAT director Wang Weiwei and guest curators art collective Slavs and Tatars, You Mi, and Alexandra Tsay. The first segment, Clouds, Power, focuses on patterns and textiles such as ikat—a specific patterned technique and craft that is believed to have originated in Indonesia before travelling to numerous locations, including Central Asian countries through trade routes such as the Silk Road. The second part of the exhibition, Ornament, highlights Central Asian traditional ornamentation, probing its decorative function and exposing the lesser-known spiritual qualities attributed to them.

Dates: February 25 to May 21
