Here are all the artworks and exhibitions to see at galleries around Island South

March is art month in Hong Kong, and the city’s cultural scene has collectively put it best foot forward. With coronavirus restrictions eased at last, internationally renowned artists, curators, and collectors are flying into the special administrative region for Art Basel and Art Central, as well as to see some local cultural action. This is also coinciding with all sorts of venues opening new exhibitions this month, including galleries, museums, and art spaces.

With so much happening and so many shows and exhibitions to see, you may be wondering what’s most worth your time to visit. So we’ve organised Tatler’s top picks by district, and here are the ones you should check out in Island South.

This spring, Empty Gallery presents two exhibitions: Sites of Wounding: Chapter 1 by Jes Fan and Screen-skins by Tishan Hsu. Both artists were featured at last year’s Venice Biennale.

Hong Kong-raised, Brooklyn-based Fan’s new body of work is inspired by Hong Kong’s once-thriving pearl farming and fishing industries. Alluding to the city’s Pearl of the Orient moniker, his new works feature the pinctada fucata pearl, which is native to Hong Kong waters and has been cultivated with embedded foreign materials. Screen-skins is a continuation of Hsu’s enquiries into our immersion in the world of screens and its effects on our cognition and relationship with our bodies. The new iterations of his series feature mixed-media pieces consisting of materials including silkscreen ink and acrylic which warp and mimic the effect of digital screens.

Date: March 18 - May 6
Address: Empty Gallery, 19/F, Grand Marine Center, 3 Yue Fung Street, Aberdeen.

This month, Blindspot Gallery will showcase The Second Interrogation (2022) by artist Wang Tuo—this being the Beijing-based artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. His films and performances are speculative narratives that are often about cultural censorship and formed by combining Chinese modern history, fiction and mythology. The titular work is a film centred around the dramatic and fraught relationship between an artist and a censor. The show will also feature drawings based on the film and a series of the artist’s latest paintings.

Date: March 21 - May 6
Address: Blindspot Gallery, 15/F, Po Chai Industrial Building, 28 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Wong Chuk Hang.
