Here are all the artworks and exhibitions to see at galleries around Central and Western District

March is art month in Hong Kong, and the city’s cultural scene has collectively put it best foot forward. With coronavirus restrictions eased at last, internationally renowned artists, curators, and collectors are flying into the special administrative region for Art Basel and Art Central, as well as to see some local cultural action. This is also coinciding with all sorts of venues opening new exhibitions this month, including galleries, museums, and art spaces.

With so much happening and so many shows and exhibitions to see, you may be wondering what’s most worth your time to visit. So we’ve organised Tatler’s top picks by district, and here are the ones you should check out in the Central and Western District.

Brooklyn based, British-Nigerian artist Tunji Adeniyi-Jones’ first solo exhibition in Asia, Deep Dive, is opening at White Cube, Hong Kong, featuring new works and lithographs by the artist. His colourful canvases often elicit comparisons to famous artist throughout history, but upon closer viewing—and perhaps with the understanding that he draws inspiration from West African mythology—the artist’s work displays a distinctive aesthetic, an almost graphic approach characterised by androgynous black and brown bodies in motion, embedded in swirling, patterned motifs.

Date: March 22 to May 20
Address: 50 Connaught Rd Central, Central.

Acclaimed artist Rirkrit Tiravanija is opening his first solo exhibition, The Shop, at David Zwirner in Hong Kong. The show will be an expansive one, featuring seminal works from the artist’s career and ahead of the largest survey of the artist’s work opening at MoMA PS1 in New York, in October this year. The new works in exhibition are inspired by Chinese author Liu Cixin’s acclaimed Remembrance of Earth’s Past science-fiction trilogy, one of the most successful book series to emerge internationally from China. In May 2021, Tiravanija’s seminal early work Untitled (1990) (pad thai) was featured in The Real World, a group exhibition at the gallery’s Hong Kong location.

Date: March 20 to May 6, 2023
Address: 6/F, H Queen’s, 80 Queen’s Road Central.
