Tatler’s Cultural Icon award goes to Amanda Nell Eu, the first Malaysian female filmmaker to win at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s International Critics’ Week for her film, Tiger Stripes
At Tatler Ball, the Cultural Icon Award is presented to an individual who has made significant strides in the realm of art and culture in the previous year. This year, this honour goes to none other than Ghost Grrrl Pictures co-founder and breakout Malaysian filmmaker Amanda Nell Eu. Eu made waves in 2023 as the first Malaysian female director to win Cannes’ Grand Prix 2023 for her debut directorial work, Tiger Stripes, which won the grand prize at the Critics’ Week Grand Prix 2023—a first for a Malaysian film, let alone a Malaysian female director.
Through her films, Eu aspires to address society’s fear and misunderstanding of women and female bodies, all while treating characters and topics with the utmost respect and sensitivity. On top of being selected as the opening film for the 39th Singapore International Film Festival 2023 and winning the Best Picture and Best Director awards at Q Cinema International Film Festival’s Asian Next Wave Competition 2023 in November, Tiger Stripes has also been submitted for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards next year, bringing a close to a fantastic year for Eu and going a long way to pave a prominent path to elevate Malaysian cinema overseas.

In honour of her exceptional achievements, Eu was awarded Talter’s Cultural Icon Award, which included a custom pewter trophy by Royal Selangor and a gift voucher worth RM5,000 from Valiram, one of the proud partners of Tatler Ball 2023.
