The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) recently unveiled its latest regional addition: the National Museum in Baler
A gift for tourists and locals alike: nestled in the heart of Aurora, the new National Museum of the Philippines-Baler will offer a space for art and history lovers. A special preview was conducted in advance of its formal opening, giving guests a glimpse of what’s to come.
As of this post, the National Museum of the Philippines maintains 16 museums operating beyond Metro Manila. Under Republic Act No. 11333 or the National Museum Act of the Philippines, the group is tasked with establishing a regional museum and satellite office in each administrative region outside Metro Manila, along with additional museums and offices where needed.
The creation of the National Museum in Baler realises a long-envisioned project first championed by the late Senator Edgardo J Angara. Today, that vision is carried forward with quiet resolve by his son, Education Secretary and National Museum Trustee Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara.
“This museum stands as a tribute not only to Aurora’s rich cultural and natural heritage, but also to the enduring ties between the Philippines and Spain,” said NMP director-general Jeremy Barns in his welcome remarks. “May it serve as a place where heritage is honoured, stories are told and fresh cultural encounters take root.”

Designed by noted architect Ed Calma, the museum is set to become a striking example of contemporary Filipino architecture. Its form takes cues from the distinct landscape of the region, shaped by the Sierra Madre mountains to the west and the vast Pacific Ocean to the east.
It will also serve as a tribute to the indigenous and settler communities of eastern Luzon, particularly the Dumagat, Agta, Ilongot-Bugkalot, Tagalogs and Ilokanos, whose diverse cultures are at the heart of the region’s identity.
Located beside the Senator Edgardo J. Angara Convention Centre, it is poised to enrich regional tourism and development. Inside, visitors will find a thoughtful mix of ethnographic and natural history collections that highlight both the human story and the ecological richness of the area.

As part of the preview, guests explored a pop-up exhibition titled Encuentros: Tracing Philippine–Spanish Connections, which celebrated centuries of shared history and enduring cultural ties between the Philippines and Spain.
“This is just the beginning,” Barns noted. “As we move toward the full opening, we welcome the public’s ideas and aspirations on how this museum can best serve Aurora and the broader community.”
