Nendo, founded by designer Oki Sato, will be taking up residence at Israel's Design Museum Holon from June 8 to October 30, 2016, in the first large-scale retrospective showcasing the work of this internationally renowned Japanese design studio.

"Nendo - The Space in Between" features pieces spanning the career of Oki Sato, from the studio's early years to recent designs. These will be displayed both inside and outside the museum, ensuring visitors a truly immersive experience.

The exhibition explores the challenges addressed in Nendo's work, encountered while interacting with different types of objects and their unexplored areas and dimensions.

"This presentation investigates the only space in which Sato could not intervene ...," said the exhibition curator, Maria Cristina Didero. "The theme became a narrative expedient to tell the story of his unique career, up to nowadays."

The exhibition features 74 pieces presented in six categories, exploring the design process, materials and boundaries, as well as objects, relationships and senses.

Oki Sato, founder of Nendo

Nendo's founder, Oki Sato, is considered one of the biggest talents in Japanese minimalist design. Born in Toronto, Canada, he studied architecture at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.

In Japanese, "nendo" means "modelling clay," a soft, fluid and malleable material that symbolises the way in which the studio's founders work.

Nendo's members focus on the many small moments of surprise hidden in daily life, which they hope to capture and highlight through their designs.

Nendo has received a host of prizes and awards recognising the studio's work throughout the years. Newsweek listed Oki Sato in its "100 Most Respected Japanese" in 2006 and placed Nendo in the "Top 100 Small Japanese Companies" in 2008.

Oki Sato was crowned "Designer of the Year" at the January 2016 edition of the Maison & Objet interior design trade fair in Paris, France.

Nendo has worked with brands such as Cappellini, Moroso, Bisazza, Tod, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Baccarat, Camper, Puma, Starbucks and Coca-Cola.

"Nendo - The Space in Between" runs June 8 to October 30, 2016, at Design Museum Holon in Israel.
