"I want to create an environment that encourages viewers to think more deeply about the roles and expectations of women," says Mimi Tecson
Every day is and should be Women's Day, but still, it is in the best interest of everyone to recognise these forces of nature and dedicate special days to them. On March 8, we celebrate International Women's Day—a day that upholds not only the achievements of women but also their challenges and arduous journey in society, culture, economy, and politics. Recognising these feats, Shangri-La Plaza will host a book launch and art exhibit on the same day at the East Atrium at 5 pm.
Shangri-La Plaza will spotlight Filipina creatives and showcase their experiences, stories, and creations with A Woman Unboxed, a book launch and art exhibit. The event is a powerful collaboration between writer and publisher Gayle Certeza and mixed media artist Mimi Tecson.

Certeza aims to launch her book, A Woman Unboxed and Other Stories of Growing Up, which chronicles the joys and challenges of growing up in a small town in Mindanao. “This book is my homage to my roots. The book journeys through woundings and hurts and comes out on the other side powered by hopes, dreams, and love,” she explains.

Meanwhile, Tecson hopes to show her own A Woman Unboxed pieces that explore the complexities of motherhood, dreams, and aspirations through the mediums of assemblage and collage. "By using a variety of textures, colour, and form, I want to create an environment that encourages viewers to think more deeply about the roles and expectations of women,” Tecson adds.
Audiences must look forward to female writers Carissa Singson, Dina Pecaña, Edlyn Ng Cha, Gina Verdolaga, Kat Gomez-Limchoc, Maureen Sandejas, Rose Marie Yenko, Sonia Roco, and Tweet Sering as well, who will all hold talks about inspiration, creativity, and storytelling.
