Meet the international cast of Repertory Philippines’ production of ‘ART’
For the second play of its 88th season, Repertory Philippines (REP) brings Yasmina Reza’s Oliver and Tony Award-winning comedy, ART, to Filipino theatre fans. Premiering in 1994 at Comédie des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the French-language play was brought to Wyndham’s Theatre in 1996 and on Broadway in 1998 after being translated by Christopher Hampton. Under the direction of Victor Lirio, ART will star a small cast of veteran actors—Martin Sarreal, Brian Sy, and Freddy Sawyer.

Themed around art and friendship, the play follows three long-time friends, Serge, Marc, and Yvan. When Serge spends an exorbitant amount of money for an all-white painting—which basically looks like a blank canvas—Marc expresses violent reactions, hinting at a deeper resentment towards one another while Yvan tries to play both sides.

Playing Serge is Filipino-British actor Martin Sarreal, who is most recognised for his performance as Lord Barnell on the third season of the hit Netflix series, Bridgerton. He also appeared on the world premiere of the Elton John and Jake Shears musical, Tammy Faye at the Almeida Theatre in London, Here Lies Love at the Royal National Theatre, and Forty Years On at the Chichester Festival Theatre among many others.

London-based theatre and television actor and writer Freddy Sawyer also joins the cast as Marc. A seasoned thespian who trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Sawyer once again works with Lirio—having played the role of Davis in the production of Red Light Winter at London’s Turbine Theatre in 2021.

Repertory Philippines’ staging of ART will run from June 13 to June 21 at the recently inaugurated REP Eastwood Theatre, Quezon City. For more information, visit their social media pages.
