Get to know the cast of 9Works Theatrical’s adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s ‘Rent’
“And we’re hungry and frozen, some life that we’ve chosen. How we gonna pay last year’s rent!”
First staged in 1993, Rent is often considered the standard for modern musicals. Set in the late ’80s, it is a story of poverty, loss, romance, and the pursuit of dreams against the backdrop of HIV/AIDS. Considered Jonathan Larson’s magnum opus and final work, this musical is designed to resonate with all audiences, no matter the time period.
In celebration of its 15th anniversary, 9Works Theatrical brings one of the most acclaimed rock musicals to life at the RCBC Plaza in Makati on April 19.

Rent has been considered ahead of its time for introducing a different musical taste to a Sondheim-Rodgers and Hammerstein-Lloyd Weber-dominated Broadway, featuring a diverse cast of characters that adapt Puccini’s La Bohéme to modern-day sensibilities. From ethnicities to sexual orientation and socio-economic backgrounds, you’re sure to recognise yourself in one (or more) of them. Though set over 30 years ago in New York, director Robbie Guevara shared that its relevance has not diminished.
“The story of Rent is not that different from today. We still have cases of AIDS that are kept secret. There’s still shame associated with it,” said Robbie Guevara, director. “Many are still scared to get tested or to speak up about HIV/AIDS. There are those who keep it very private, and we just want to let everyone know that they can still live a long and productive life with the proper medication,” continued Markki Stroem (playing as Benny).
The topic of HIV/AIDS is very touchy even today. The disease is often shrouded in prejudice and fear—even getting labelled as the ‘gay virus.’ Despite efforts from many artists and activist groups to educate people about it, it seems no progress has been made. “They don’t talk about it enough in schools. This [Rent] is one way to reach out to the newer generation. This is a conversation that must go on and on,” said Lance Reblando (playing as Angel).
