The POLY MGM MUSEUM, Macau’s latest cultural landmark, opens with an exhibition that brings the storied past of the Maritime Silk Road to life for a new generation
The Maritime Silk Road acts as a reminder that globalisation is far from a modern invention—it has been shaping human history for over two millennia. This ancient network of trade routes not only carried silk, spices, and ceramics but also acted as a bridge for the exchange of ideas, cultures, and innovations that helped civilisations thrive.
Today, this rich history is being brought to life at the POLY MGM MUSEUM in Macau, with its inaugural exhibition, The Maritime Silk Road – Discover the Mystical Seas and Encounter the Treasures of the Ancient Trade Route. The exhibition combines ancient artefacts with modern technology, taking visitors through the significance of the Maritime Silk Road in shaping the world we know today.

The opening of the museum’s first exhibition, held at the iconic Grande Praça in the MGM Macau, attracted more than 200 distinguished guests, including Macao Special Administrative Region chief executive Ho Iat Seng, and China Poly Group Corporation Limited chairman Liu Hualong and director Zhang Hao. According to Pansy Ho, chairperson and executive director of MGM China Holdings Limited, “Macau was once a key node on the Maritime Silk Road and has always been an important cultural landscape that connects China to the world. As a result, Macau has developed a unique urban spirit that integrates east and west, and connects ancient and modern times.”
This connection between past and present is beautifully captured in the exhibition. It features a collection of 228 artefacts and artworks, including treasures such as the bronze zodiac heads from the Old Summer Palace, showcasing the rich heritage of the ancient trade route and its lasting influence on the world.
The POLY MGM MUSEUM spans almost 2,000 square metres, integrating traditional Chinese craftsmanship with cutting-edge environmental regulation technology. As the museum opens its doors to the public, the exhibition offers a captivating journey through the Maritime Silk Road’s legacy, blending history with the vibrancy of the modern world. This cultural landmark at the heart of Macau reinforces the city’s role as a global hub for art and heritage—where the past inspires the present and shapes the future.
