After being hotly contested by 10 bidders at the Sotheby's Paris auction June 6, "Peinture 162 x 130 cm, 14 avril 1962" by Pierre Soulages finally sold for €6,120,000.

Initally estimated at €2-3 million, the artwork is unusual in that it features a light blue shade, a color only rarely used in the work of the master of black. However, the auction house points out that it was a blue work that set the artist's previous global sales record in London in 2013.

Considering it important, Pierre Soulages was first of all keen to keep the work in his own collection. However, it soon caught the attention of an American gallery owner, not to mention Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning. The gallery owner acquired "Peinture 162 x 130 cm, 14 avril 1962," which remained in the collection until their death.
