A new month means a new round of books to read. This summer, take a break from Netflix and pick up a book instead—the perfect companion to a day at the beach, at a picnic or while enjoying the weather inside a coffee shop or a beachside restaurant.

Whether you're looking for some good ol' romance, exciting thrillers or coming-of-age novels, there's a lot to choose from. Here, we list down the best books coming out in June. If you missed it, you can still check out our round-up of new books in April and May.

1. The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris

Zakiya Dalila Harris' debut novel, The Other Black Girl is part-Get Out, part-The Stepford Wives. This stunning debut is about 26-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers, who's simply just tired of being the only Black employee at her company. She's fed up with the isolation and microaggression so when Harlem-born and bred Hazel starts working beside her, she's thrilled. Just as the two start bonding over her hair care regimens, Hazel suddenly becomes the Office Darling, leaving Nella all alone.

As if that's not enough, she receives a note on her desk asking her to leave the company and she tries to find out who wants her out. Though she soon realises that it's not just her career at stake now. The Other Black Girl is a thriller injected with sly social commentary that feels relevant to anyone who has been manipulated and overlooked in their workplace.

2. Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Malibu Rising is the latest book by best-selling author Taylor Jenkins Reid and follows four famous siblings who throw a party to celebrate the end of summer. Little will they know that those 24 hours will change their lives forever.

Set in 1983 in Malibu, the story takes place on the day of Nina Riva's highly-anticipated end-of-summer party. The Rivas are the talk of the town because of the supermodel brothers and adorable sister. But Nina is different from her siblings—she doesn't like fame or attention and dreads her party. Things didn't go as plan and by morning, the Riva mansion has gone up in flames. But how did it happen?

3. The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo

Nghi Vo's debut novel, The Chosen and the Beautiful follows the story of Jordan Baker, an immigrant, socialite and magician. Jordan grew up in the most elite circle of 1920s American society with money, education and invitations to exclusive parties of that time. But Jordan soon discovers that there's more to the world than meets the eye: infernal pacts, ghosts and elemental mysteries.

This novel reimagines The Great Gatsby as a coming-of-age story of a queer, Asian and adopted character filled with magic, mystery and glittering excess.

4. We Are Inevitable by Gayle Forman

Award-winning young adult author Gayle Forman has a new romance novel, We Are Inevitable. For Aaron Stein, the inevitable hasn't worked out in his favour. His friends have gone to college and moved on with her lives but Aaron's still stuck in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State, running a failing bookshop with his dad. He's just in desperate need of a break.

5. Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon

Nicola Yoon, the best-selling author of Everything, Everything and The Sun is Also a Star (which have been adapted into movies) returns with her third novel, Instructions for Dancing. The book tells the story of Evie Thomas who just doesn't believe in love anymore. One day, she witnesses a couple kiss and imagines how they fall in love...and how their romance will end.

6. Heaven by Mieko Kawakami

Japanese literary sensation Mieko Kawakami's new book Heaven is buzzing with anticipation following the success of Breast and Eggs. The story follows a 14-year-old student who has been a victim of school bullying and instead of resisting, chooses to suffer in complete silence. His only companion is a fellow student who's suffering the same treatment.

Kawakami's bold foray into new literary territory looks at the raw and realistic portrayals of bullying, a subject matter that remains an issue in Japan which is also known as ijime. This new book further cements Kawakami's talent as one of the most important literary talents of her generation. While Heaven was released in May, the UK edition is out this month.

7. The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

Cyprus-born and London-based author, Alex Michaelides follows up his stunning debut last year with The Maidens, a thriller-mystery fiction guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat. The story is about a brilliant but troubled group therapist, Mariana Andros who's certain that Edward Fosca is a murder. Edward, a charismatic Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University is well-liked by his colleagues and students, especially The Maidens, a secret society of female students.

Mariana becomes obsessed with the group when a member who's also a friend of Mariana's niece gets murdered in Cambridge. She suspects Edward is the murderer. But when another body is found, her fixation on Edward as the culprit spirals out of control.

8. The Layover by Lacie Waldon

The Layover is the book you should be reading for your summer romantic escapade this season, especially with travel still restricted at the moment. The story is about flight attendant Ava Greene, who after working in the industry for 10 years, is ready to quit. She has one last trip before she can bid farewell and she just wants to make it the most memorable one. But she soon finds out that Jack, a former pilot and whom Ava has held a grudge for years is on her flight. Good thing she'll never see him again after...or so she thought.

The plane encounters a mechanical problem and quickly makes a stop at Belize airport but that suddenly turned into a weekend layover. Ava is stuck with her nemesis but as the two spend more time together, she begins to question everything she knew about him and if she really wanted to quit the life she's spent a decade on.

9. Survive the Night by Riley Sager

Another thriller mystery to keep you at the edge of your seats this month is Riley Sager's Survive the Night. The former journalist turned full-time author sets his new book in 1991 where movie enthusiast and college student, Charlie Jordan finds himself in a car with someone who might be a serial killer.

The man in question is Josh Baxter. The two met at a campus ride board, both looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. They share something in common: they both just want to escape reality. For Charlie, it's the guilt and grief over the death of his best friend and for Josh, it's to help care for his sick father. Or at least, that's what Josh says. Charlie has doubts, finding holes in his story and other suspicious things that take place over their ride together. What follows is a game of cat-and-mouse over shrouded roads and neon-lit parking lots.
