In Japan, taiko, which translates to "drum", is known for its loud, reverberating sound. Often played to match a stylised choreography, this beloved percussion instrument has been used for over 2000 years.
Taiko has its roots in a Japanese court, theatre, and religious ceremonies that upbeat need music. In the mid-20th century, it evolved into the kumi-daiko, gaining tremendous popularity in the US. Since then, the instrument has become a symbol of heritage and culture for the Japanese-American community.

Leonard Eto, one of the most accomplished and innovative contemporary players of taiko or Japanese percussion instruments, is taking his Taiko Beat: Leonard Eto Philippine Tour 2023 to the Shangri-La Plaza at the Grand Atrium on February 25 at 4 pm.
His show will include performance of guest Tusa Montes, a percussionist, ethnomusicologist, and educator who specialises in the music of the Philippines, Asia, West Africa, and Latin America. Presented by Japan Foundation Manila and supported by Japan Tobacco International and Japan Airlines, the event will showcase the instrument's distinct sound.

Eto’s tour stop is part of Shang’s Nihongo Fiesta, which aims to celebrate the Japanese language and culture. Another activity lined up for the fest is the 50th Nihongo Speech Contest happening at the Red Carpet at the Shang on the same day at 1 pm.

In this event, Filipino students and professionals are set to demonstrate their Japanese linguistic skills by articulating their original compositions.
