Acclaimed musical theatre and film actor Joanna Ampil is portraying Carlotta in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera’
“I am excited about everything. It’s a dream show of mine, and I get to use that part of my voice that I don’t always get to explore,” Joanna Ampil tells Tatler. The West End star is taking on a new role; this time, she will give life to the character of Carlotta in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera at His Majesty’s Theatre in London.
Ampil takes her musical talent to new heights. Carlotta is the lead soprano and prima donna of Opera Populaire; coloratura sopranos who can sing from an Eb6 to F6 range typically take on this role.
“If people know the show, then they’ll know that this role requires an operatic soprano coloratura range, and I get to sing up to a glorious high E live every night.”

Ampil seeks to add a personal touch to her version of Carlotta. “I think every role an actor plays is unique, special, and personal because one applies one's life experience to how a character is portrayed,” she says. “I’m proud to be an Asian representation for this iconic role!” she adds.
Ampil is very grateful to be included in the cast starting July 2024. She takes pride in being on stage with phenomenal artists such as Dean Chisnall (The Phantom / Erik), Martin Ball (Monsieur Firmin), Helen Hobson (Madame Giry), Lily Kerhoas (Christine Daaé), Joe Griffiths-Brown (Raoul), Adam Linstead (Monsieur André), David Kristopher-Brown (Ublado Piangi), and Millie Lyon (Meg Giry).
“Phantom is also a legend. Everyone knows it and has high expectations. The challenge of being in a show that is already very popular and well-loved is intimidating but also so thrilling. So wish us, the new cast, the very best and pray for us,” says Ampil.
