Porvenir brings its intimate theatrical production of ‘El Fuego del Alma’ to Circuit Makati for a special ARTober engagement

Following a largely sold-out run, Porvenir’s production of El Fuego del Alma has been invited to Circuit Makati for a special eight-show engagement this October. The play will run at the Art Directed Studio, located at the Upper Level of Circuit Lane in Ayala Malls Circuit, Makati, on October 24, 25, 30, and 31, 2026. The staging is presented in partnership with ArtDirected and forms part of ARTober, Circuit Makati’s month-long arts and culture celebration.

Translated into Filipino by Eljay Castro Deldoc, El Fuego del Alma is an adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play Summer and Smoke. The narrative follows two individuals caught between opposing ideas of the body, desire, morality, and love. The conflict between the physical and the spiritual acts as the foundation for the production’s exploration of faith, repression, longing, and the truths people struggle to admit to themselves.

For the upcoming run, the production reunites its original cast. However, the move to a new venue means the staging will be reimagined for the Art Directed Studio, which accommodates approximately 100 audience members.

Director and dramaturg Mark Mirando emphasised that they intend to rethink how the play exists within the new space while maintaining the close connection between performers and audiences that defined its previous run.

“We don't want to simply transplant the show,” Mirando stated. “Every space changes the way an audience watches and the way actors perform. We want to respond to that. The challenge is to keep the closeness of El Fuego while allowing the production to grow into this new space.”

The ARTober engagement will also serve as a benefit run for Porvenir. Proceeds from the eight shows will support the theatre company’s planned regional tour, aiming to bring the production to audiences outside of Metro Manila.

“11 sold-out shows told us that there are still people who want to encounter this work,” Mirando explained. “Now we have an opportunity to meet a new audience in Makati, while hopefully creating a path for the production to travel even farther.”

The addition of the play expands the remaining lineup of ‘ARTober: Where Art Forms Collide’, a festival featuring a variety of workshops, performances, and exhibitions. Through the rest of October, the estate will host the conclusion of the About Us But Not About Us rerun on October 25, and K-Ballet Tokyo’s Flames of Paris on October 24. Attendees can also join several workshops at Craft Manila, such as Halloween cookie mosaic making on October 24 and basic embroidery on October 31, alongside an alternative processing workshop at Kontempo Community Space on October 24. Furthermore, ArtDirected will lead panel discussions on arts funding and grants on October 24, and graphic design for the international market on October 31.

Performances for El Fuego del Alma are scheduled for 3pm and 7pm on October 24 and 25. On October 30, there will be a single show at 7pm, followed by three shows on October 31 at 1pm, 3pm, and 7pm.
