The late David Bowie was an artist who was unafraid to dip his fingers into many different sectors, from music to fashion design. More interestingly, he was also an avid collector of art.
“Art was, seriously, the only thing I’d ever wanted to own,” ArtNet News reported him as saying in a feature highlighting his extensive collection. “It can change the way that I feel in the mornings.”
The musician who passed away on Sunday, 10 January at age 69, had a soft spot for British 20th century pieces. Some of his favourite artists included Graham Sutherland, William Tillyer, Leon Kossoff and Stanley Spencer. Gavin Turk and Gilbert & George are also among his collections.
In his pursuit of beautiful things, he also lent his hand to a number of pieces, among them, a painting by Damien Hirst, who Bowie himself calls his "idea of a contemporary artist".
