The much-anticipated addition to Circuit Makati’s exemplary network of artistic spaces has finally been officially unveiled. Here’s what we know so far about the Contemporary Art Center, projected to be completed by 2027
Adding to its roster of arts and culture spaces, such as the Ayala Museum and the Filipinas Heritage Library, the Ayala Foundation unveiled plans for a world-class and expansive museum dedicated to contemporary arts.
The Contemporary Art Center, which Ayala Land President and CEO Meean Dy affectionately called “Contempo” during her speech, is set to rise at the far end of Circuit Makati, facing the Pasig River. The edifice will span 2,200 square metres and include three galleries in two storeys and a 400-square-metre outdoor area for public art installations, events, and more.

“Envision a space that serves as an experimental platform for artists to explore innovative concepts in response to the ever-changing world around us,” said Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Ayala Foundation Chairman. “A place that fosters curiosity and creativity, igniting a passion for the new and the now. This centre will be a space that not only showcases contemporary art but also nurtures the creative spirit within us all,” he added.
The Contemporary Art Center, designed by revered Filipino architect Ed Calma and Los Angeles-based Thai architect Kulapat Yantrasat, is set to be located alongside other notable artistic venues such as the Samsung Performing Arts Theater and the PowerMac Black Box Theatre in Circuit Makati.
Standing beside Circuit Grounds facing the Pasig River, this museum will hopefully blend with the national government’s ongoing rehabilitation project of the said area. Bridges and esplanades from the government’s plans are envisioned to add accessibility and immersiveness to the Contemporary Art Center.

The momentous announcement coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Ayala Museum, which is set to manage the Contemporary Art Center while looking for an artistic director to helm its collections and spearhead its own lineup of events.
Designed to engage visitors of all ages, the Contemporary Art Center aims to be the “epitome of new”, as expressed by the Ayala Corporation’s executives during the merienda cena held at the Alveo Sales Pavilion along Riverfront Drive in Circuit Makati. Plans, though in their infancy stages, include having visual art exhibitions, immersive installations, performances, film showings, digital art exhibitions, and other interactive experiences.
Mariles Gustilo, senior director of the Ayala Museum, clarifies further that it will not be ‘selling’ gallery but rather a repository of some of the finest contemporary art pieces in the Philippines, a platform for artists-in-residency programme, and a space for rotating exhibitions—celebrating the full spectrum of contemporary creativity.

Circuit Makati has been a frequented place for joggers, runners, and other citizens pursuing active lifestyles, as well as residents, mallgoers, and theatre aficionados. The addition of the Contemporary Art Center, which will have Filipino design elements that evoke a sense of belongingness and communitarian spirit, was positively received by guests from the Ayala Corporation, Circuit Makati community, and movers and shakers of the Filipino contemporary art scene who graced the unveiling.
The Contemporary Art Center, soon to rise through the partnership of WHY Architecture and Lor Calma & Partners, aims to receive sustainability awards and certifications for its innovative design.
“We believe that an appreciation of Filipino culture and heritage is an integral part of national development. This upcoming Contemporary Art Center is an expression of our enduring commitment to uphold arts and culture as an important pillar of Ayala Foundation,” said Ayala Foundation President Tony Lambino.
