Go to Neverland and heal your inner child with Ballet Philippines’ ‘Peter Pan’

Over the years, Ballet Philippines has always brought Filipino audiences meaningful Christmas performances come December. In 2022, the company brought The Nutcracker to life—transporting us to a winter wonderland. In 2023, we saw the exciting stories of Ali Baba, Cinderella, and Princess Aurora in Christmas Fairytales. Following this tradition, audiences will be taken to Neverland with Peter Pan. As a story we’re all acquainted with, Ballet Philippines’ rendition injects Filipino flair and themes that remain relevant today as they were when the book was written.

Originally created by J M Barrie in 1904 and later adapted by Disney in 1953, Peter Pan is a classic tale of imagination, freedom, and childhood wonder. While the plot is familiar, Ballet Philippines promises a fresh and unique take that has never been done before, with a completely new libretto and music.

“I specifically didn’t look at Peter Pan from another company or past productions. So I have nothing to compare with my version. For this, I read the book and studied places and details. Then I made a draft. After that, I read the book again to look at it from another angle and to find deeper details. What was the result? We’ll see in December,” shares Mikhail ‘Misha’ Martynyuk, Ballet Philippines’ artistic director.

With Eleanora Martynyuk helming costume design, audiences can expect an immersive set with a keen attention to detail. She shares that her process for the design keeps the characters’ personalities in mind. For instance, Captain Hook embodies duality, thus, his costume revolves around his dark intentions while leaving room for some whimsy. “Some elements of Captain Hook’s costume are elegant, while others are distinctly pirate-like… My inspiration in this production has three components: history, music, and choreographic line,” she says.

Ballet Philippines’ Peter Pan will be staged from December 6 to 8 at The Theatre at Solaire, Pasay City. For more information, visit their social media pages
