The National Artist in the Visual Arts for Painting takes centre stage for Ayala Museum’s “Images of Nation” exhibition.
Artist Cesar Legaspi, who is recognised for his mastered skill in cubism painting, will be the highlight starting on December in a major exhibition entitled “Images of Nation” at Ayala Museum. During the peaceful pre-war period of the country, the National Artist in the Visual Arts for Painting together with other young artists including Carlos V, Francisco, Galo B. Ocampo, Hernando R. Ocampo, and Vicente Manasala formed a group under the name Thirteen Moderns that aimed to find a revolutionary way of expressing modern art – and they have succeeded in doing so. At present amongst the Thirteen Moderns, Legaspi has sustained his impressive skill by which he is able to put a harmonious approach to cubism. His works interpret social values and are made striking with the use of intense colours.

Cesar Legaspi's painting entitled "Nativity" created in 1950
Cesar Legaspi’s exhibition entitled “The Brave Modern” will involve his works dating back to the pre-war period. The masterpieces will depict lessons in the phase of Cubism to the dominance of Neo-Realism in the 1950s and 1960s as well as selected magna opera from the 1970s to the 1980s. Guests will see the development of Philippine painting in the twentieth century through his works where the demanding facets of Cubism underwent a transition of peaceful and schematic Neo-Realism.
The exhibition will include paintings from the Ateneo Art Gallery, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, BenCab Museum, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Kalaw Ledesma Foundation, Inc., Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Centre, UCPB. To be displayed are also the private collections of Felix and Grace Ang, Louie and Liza Bate, National Artist Ben Cabrera and Annie Sarthou, Stanley and Abby Chan, Senator Nikki M.L. Coseteng, Silvana Diaz, Dr. Ambeth Ocampo, Lawrence Ong, Jonathan and Stella Que, Manuel and Alice Que, Mario and Mimi Que, Paulino and Hetty Que, Mikee and Sheila Romero, and Kirk and Joanne Young.
