As the Shanghai art fair makes its Hong Kong debut, here are Tatler’s picks on what to see at Art021
Shanghai-based art fair Art021 is making its Hong Kong debut this week and will run until September 8. Founded by collectors Kylie Ying, Rao Yifeng and David Chau, it was first launched in 2013 in Shanghai. The fair’s curatorial focus is on artists from, and artworks related to, mainland China, the Middle East, and the Chinese and Asian diaspora.
The Hong Kong edition of Art021 will be spread across multiple venues in the city, including the Phillips auction house headquarters in West Kowloon, Asia Society, The Fringe Club and Victoria Park. Additionally, Art021 will initiate the GBA Art Week, where 42 galleries will present artworks from the wider Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. With several programmes happening across the city, here’s our guide to what to look out for at Art021.

Held at Phillips auction house, the fair’s Galleries section features 40 galleries that will showcase works by established and emerging artists from across the globe. Highlights include Tehran-based Dastan Gallery’s presentation of Iranian artist Pooya Aryanpour’s intricate mirror-based sculpture and Farrokh Mahdavi’s tactile eye-catching painting. Amir Fallah’s layered and heavily detailed paintings filled with various cultural references will be on view at Gallery All’s booth. Video artist Ian Cheng’s Thousand Lives will be screened as a special project by Pilar Corrias Gallery and feature themes of constructed realities and self-determination in an ever-evolving environment. Known for being a member of China’s pop-art movement, Xue Song’s The Dao from Nature Series—Harvest (2023) will be on view at Kwai Fung Hing Gallery.
Meanwhile, the Expansion section will take place at The Fringe Club, where Hong Kong’s PHD Group will stage a trilogy of work as an installation by duo Zheng Maler, exploring topics of trade, colonial history and geopolitics. Rén Space is showcasing artist Li Binyuan’s project The Long Farewell, featuring his latest sculptures and interactive video installations.

A mini sculpture park inhabits parts of Victoria Park, where visitors can see Robert Indiana’s iconic sculpture, LOVE (Red Outside Violet Inside), presented by Pace Gallery, and artist Shiang Liang’s flesh-toned sculpture that appears to be a human torso fusing into a sofa. If you haven’t seen it yet, Korean artist Gwon Osang’s Cheese Wedge is installed on The Fringe Club’s rooftop, highlighting the location’s history as the old Dairy Farm building.
Art021’s Videos section features films and moving images which will be screened at Asia Society. Works by well-known film artists including Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Anri Sala, Cao Fei, Kimsooja and Yang Fudong will be on view, as well as a special screening of the documentary Anselm, a film directed by Wim Wenders about renowned German artist Anselm Kiefer.
