Beneath Langkawi’s ancient rainforest canopy, the launch of Human Langkawi felt like a quiet revelation. On September 29, The Datai welcomed a gathering of creative minds, culture seekers and curious hearts to witness the launch of a book that reads like a love letter to the island.

“There’s a saying that goes, “If the island likes you, you will always feel this pull towards Langkawi,” says Shi Han, the co-founder of Human Edition and author of Human Langkawi. A short work event turned into a start of a new life; where a few years earlier, Shi Han and her partner Jie packed up their lives and moved to this charming island.
Shi Han and Jie began by documenting these individuals through intimate portraits and candid conversations on Instagram. What started as a digital storytelling project gradually evolved into a beautifully printed anthology. The book spotlights 21 individuals and communities who represent Langkawi’s evolving cultural and creative landscape. Through their stories, Human Langkawi paints a vivid portrait of an island shaped not just by its natural beauty, but by the people who live, create and dream there.
