Taking a break from the gritty realities that Jonathan Larson had shown us, 9Works Theatrical heads to the tropics for ‘Once on this Island’
At the closing show of Rent, 9 Works Theatrical announced its next production—Once on this Island, set to be staged this September. Fay Castro (Joanne Jefferson) and Garrett Bolden (Tom Collins) set the scene as Thea Astley (Mimi Marquez) blew the audience away with a performance of Waiting for Life.
The musical follows a peasant girl, Ti Moune, who rescues Daniel Beauxhomme, a wealthy boy with whom she falls in love. As Daniel returns to his people, Ti Moune pursues him but is shunned due to her social status. A story of hope and faith, Once on This Island shows that love is more powerful than death.

First staged off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in 1990, the musical went to Broadway in the same year and later opened at the West End in 1994, where it won the 1995 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. It was revived in 2017, starring theatre stars Lea Salonga, Hailey Kilgore, Isaac Cole Powell, and more. The following year, Once on this Island won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

A modern Broadway classic, theatre fans can expect a masterful adaptation from 9Works Theatrical—and in typical 9 Works fashion, a special surprise that will astonish audiences. We’ve seen it in the company’s run of Tick… Tick… Boom! when the stage collapsed to mirror Jon’s fractured mental state and recently in Rent when Angel performed an aerial silk dance during her death. It’s exciting to see how creative 9Works Theatrical will get this time.
