The Philux managing director views hosting as an extension of wellness and mindfulness. From her guest list to the tablescapes to the menu, she demonstrates how a well-curated entertaining experience flows naturally with both beauty and purpose
Armed with a natural grace and a skilled eye for design, Stephanie Kienle Gonzalez understands the value of a good edit. As managing director of Philux, a leading Philippine furniture brand, entertaining at home is not a mere social gathering but a chance to build intentional moments. “Entertaining at home allows me to create a space where people feel welcomed and relaxed. It is an intimate way of nurturing relationships and celebrating the simple joy of gathering around a table,” she explains. “A home becomes more alive when it is filled with stories, laughter and meaningful exchanges.”
For those fortunate enough to be guests at the Gonzalez’s fêtes, they may notice a signature look which reflects the hostess’s preference for natural textures, warm lighting, considered proportions and soulful music. To sum up, it exudes a sense of calm elegance. She admits that she gravitates toward materials that feel “tactile and honest,” as well as table settings that blend refinement with organic beauty. Might this be traced back to her spending an increased amount of time living in South Africa? We had to ask. “Absolutely,” Gonzalez replies. “Cape Town’s raw beauty and relaxed lifestyle have encouraged more alfresco entertaining and a deeper integration of nature into the home. We often gather outdoors, surrounded by views and fresh air, which has made my approach to hosting even more organic and intuitive. I also love the idea of an elevated braai, cooking by the fire and lingering under the open sky.”

This love for the organic extends to her hosting style, which Gonzalez places as somewhere in between structured and informal. “Thoughtful preparation sets the foundation, although the energy remains fluid and easygoing. I like to craft an experience that feels thoughtful and curated but never stiff. The best gatherings leave room for spontaneity and create a feeling that anything delightful can happen.”
Gonzalez offers a look into her thought process when preparing to entertain at home, as well as tips on how aspiring hosts and hostesses can level up their game by simply being more mindful and authentic.

As a home design expert, how do tablescapes and food displays impact a celebration?
Design has a direct effect on how people interact and feel. A harmonious tablescape invites guests to engage with one another and enjoy the food with intention. The way dishes are presented, arranged, and served guides flow, comfort and mood. Guests should feel comfortable and attended to. Nuance matters because thoughtful design translates into thoughtful hospitality.
How is hosting connected to wellness and mindfulness for you?
Hospitality can be a form of care. Setting a table with presence, choosing nourishing food and creating a relaxed atmosphere encourage a moment of peace and connection, a chance to disconnect from everyday life. Hosting becomes a conscious act of well-being, not only for others but also for oneself. I love making personal gestures. It is my way of showering my guests with love and thoughtful attention.
What does it take to be a good host? Any advice for beginners?
Empathy is essential. A good host anticipates needs and cultivates inclusivity. Meaningful conversation, respect for preferences and awareness of different personalities shape an enjoyable evening. Practical tips include curating a balanced guest list, having dietary-restriction-friendly options and ensuring that introductions are warm and effortless.

Why do you love using natural elements at home?
Nature adds harmony to a space. Wood, stone, greenery and woven textures bring warmth and a sense of grounding. Sculptural florals add movement and poetry, introducing organic forms that transform tables and rooms into living compositions. These elements soften the environment and create an atmosphere that encourages slow, meaningful living. There is beauty in authenticity and in materials touched by human hands.
How do you curate the look of a dinner party?
The approach varies. Sometimes the cuisine inspires the palette and décor. Other times, the energy of the group determines the setting. I do not like sticking to cookie-cutter themes. I follow my intuition, and once the ball rolls, I let the magic unfold. The most successful dinners balance intention with adaptability.
How do you decide what food to prepare?
Simple, seasonal and thoughtful dishes always win. I consider what will allow me to be present with my guests, rather than tied to the kitchen. Sharing food that feels nourishing, not intimidating, makes everyone comfortable. Celebrating local ingredients whenever possible is important to me as well.

What is your go-to cuisine at home?
Mediterranean and Asian dishes appear often in our home because they celebrate fresh produce, vibrant herbs and sharing-style dining. They lend themselves to conviviality.
Do you have a signature dish or beverage?
A slow-roasted fish with citrus and herbs is a family favourite, served with generously dressed greens. We also love our curried corn soup, warm and hearty. For drinks, bubbly as an aperitif is always lovely, followed by a refreshing calamansi spritz or fresh coconut juice, often garnished with herbs from the garden.
How should tablescape design connect with food and beverage?
There should always be harmony between the sensory elements. The colours, textures and elevations of the food can inspire the table décor. Glassware, plating and linens should enhance the dining experience, never distract from it.

What music do you play when entertaining?
Warm, rhythmic melodies that drift effortlessly through a room. Jazz, bossa nova or Afro-soul playlists create an atmosphere without overpowering conversation.
Do you have signature scents at home?
Clean, grounded scents that evoke nature. Notes of vetiver, cedarwood or citrus create a subtle backdrop that uplifts the environment while remaining understated.
