Baby Whisenhunt shares hosting tips for creating tasteful tablescapes, which set the stage for cherished memories with family and friends

As the founder of Statement Theory, a company that has brought some of the most elegant tableware to our shores, Baby Whisenhunt understands the art of hosting better than most.

Whisenhunt’s interest in hosting goes beyond the pieces on the table. “I intend to bring people together and make them feel appreciated,” she shares. “The key elements are comfort and connection, as the table is a gathering place for everyone to share meals and create memories.”

For Whisenhunt, each detail of the tablescape is equally significant. From the moment guests arrive, she advises to immerse them in a warm, inviting atmosphere. She encourages hosts to push the boundaries of creativity through seasonal decorations or natural elements. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with different themes and elements,” Whisenhunt urges. “These will make your table settings unique and inviting.”

What are the different aspects of a tablescape?

Linens are the foundation of a good tablescape, with a lovely tablecloth or runner and beautiful napkins. It’s also important to have tableware and glassware that complement the theme. Elegantly arranged glassware can bring pops of colour to the table, and even add visual appeal when candlelight glimmers off the crystal!

One cannot forget the centrepieces, which include focal points like flowers, candles or other decorative objects. However, it is important to stay mindful of height– you want to maintain conversation across the table. Sometimes, small decorative items like figurines and sprigs of greenery add a touch of charm.

What is a good starting point for those interested in collecting high-value pieces for the table?

It depends on one’s lifestyle and entertaining habits, but one should invest in pieces you will be using in the long term to maximise the value of your purchase. Silverware from brands like Jean Puiforcat, Buccellati or Tiffany & Co can be used over time. Porcelain dinnerware from brands such as Limoges, Herend, Royal Copenhagen or Meissen would also be beneficial, with one set for daily use and one for special occasions.

For frequent hosts or those with a large family, consider buying two or three sets. If one wants to invest in good crystals, Baccarat makes some of the best. Other good brands include Lalique, Waterford, Moser and Saint-Louis. For more affordable options, I recommend Gabriel-Glas, Glasvin, RCR Cristalleria Italiana, Riedel and Luigi Bormioli.

Which silver tableware pieces should one invest in, and why?

Silver flatware will last a lifetime, adding an old-world elegance to the table while increasing in value over time. Silver candelabras create an ambience and dress up any formal dining occasion. Having serveware such as water pitchers, serving utensils and platters will elevate any buffet-style dining experience. These items are beautiful yet functional.

How should one take care of their silver pieces?

Use a soft cloth and silver cleaners every few months because silver requires maintenance. Silver should be hand-washed; a baking soda solution can remove the tarnish. After cleaning and polishing the silver, it should be covered in Saran Wrap to minimise exposure to the air and to prevent tarnishing.

What recommendations do you have for flowers and candles on the table?

When you want a safe yet sophisticated floral arrangement, go with neutrals like greens, whites or foliage. For more vibrancy, add colours that reflect your innate creativity. Ultimately, people will appreciate your unique, authentic touch. It all depends on your style, whether you are a minimalist or a maximalist.

What is the most important consideration a host should take into account when building a tablescape?

The guests’ comfort is the highest priority. At the table, give each guest the space to enjoy their meal without feeling too cramped. The room should also not be too hot or cold. Lastly, the host’s mood impacts the atmosphere. Stay relaxed and enjoy the moment.
