Blending vibrant hues with soothing materials to create the perfect entertaining space, Rachel Sloane Interiors created a family’s forever home in New York City

In a theatrical city such as New York, it is easier than ever for homes to feel like considered, beautiful sets. But for this sprawling apartment created by Rachel Sherman of Rachel Sloane Interiors for a young family, she wanted them to feel at home. “There was a constant sense of discovery around every corner,” Sloane mused. “There was nothing cookie-cutter about it.”

Sherman wanted to highlight the warmth and generosity of her client, a well-travelled individual who was equally devoted to cooking, board games with the kids and entertaining friends. As a result, the New York abode is an eclectic mix of furniture and knick-knacks from all over the world. With Sloane’s steady hand infusing each room with colour, the home sets an undeniably inviting stage for many more milestones to come.

Upon entering the home, the gallery sets the tone with a funky centre table made out of travertine. Overhead hangs a modern pendant, while a nearby art piece celebrates street style culture.

Beyond the entryway stand three distinct zones, starting with the family room and leading into the formal seating area and dining area. The family room highlights organic forms that encourage meaningful conversations, with the Dirk van der Kooij colourful melting table at the centre of a circular rug and nesting stone coffee tables in deep green marble from Ransom & Dunn.

Connected to the family room is a smaller, more formal seating area, which features a Noguchi floor lamp that adds unexpected, airy materiality to the surrounding space. Finally, there stands the dining area. A resin table stands in the centre of the room, staying low-maintenance and adaptable for a family that entertains family and friends throughout the week.

Against the wall stands a custom RSI marble bookshelf, custom-designed by the studio after a long and fruitless search for something sufficiently statement-making. This remarkable feature was built from five different types of marble pieced together like a puzzle, its striking composition creating a conversation-starter while housing the family's photographs, books, and travel-collected curiosities.

Moving on to the true heart of an entertainer’s home, the New York apartment kitchen maintains a welcoming atmosphere. Custom oak cabinetry extends to the footprint, absorbing the former separate breakfast room, while four woven oak veneer cabinet fronts quietly distinguish this zone from the main kitchen.

A sculptural island increases surface area for party preparations, but avoids taking up too much presence in the home by staying deliberately storage-free below the worktop. The eye-catching kitchen island serves a secondary purpose, marking the material meeting point between two stones and the brass used across the counter, backsplash, and hood.

To soften the space, Sherman added a kitchen sofa beneath the window. The pink-on-pink cherry blossom fabric works harmoniously with the elegance of the oak features, creating one of her most favourite nooks in the home.

Moving on to the more private areas, the primary bedroom transforms the homeowner’s love of colour into the basis for a tranquil sanctuary. The ensuite bathroom features custom bathroom floor tiles in pink and green, their retro charm echoed by a sculptural pink chair and mossy green curtains nearby.

To create a more muted palette, Ceppo Beige marble adds a watercolour-like sensibility to the New York space. Meanwhile, the primary bedroom features a Ceramicah lamp that Sherman considered one of her favourite pieces.

Finally, Sherman points out a converted bedroom that became a den. The most deliberately relaxed room in the New York apartment, it features a bold blue sectional paired with colourful artworks against muted green walls and a rug underfoot. Above the vignette stands a Serge Mouille ceiling light, allowing the family to unwind after a long day of entertaining amid the bustling city outdoors.

Altogether, the home has become a flexible canvas for the homeowners’ personalities to evolve. From board games to study sessions, from quiet, home-cooked meals to birthday celebrations, Rachel Sloane Interiors has created a true “forever home” that matches the dynamic energy and bright optimism of this aspirational city.
