Explore the quiet strength and architectural precision of Innovarc Design through this bungalow in Mexico, Pampanga
As time goes on, one’s home becomes more than a space to return to at the end of the day. It stands as a reflection of one’s journey, a testament to the struggles and triumphs faced at various phases in life. Such is the case for the Alabaster project by Innovarc Design, nestled in the heart of Mexico, Pampanga.
The owners are former overseas Filipino workers who tapped Architect Justine Garcia and her team to design a home that reflects their journey so far. “By the time the owners engaged us, we visited the site—the lot carried with it a quiet promise, a space where the vision of a lifelong dream home could take root,” she shared. Key values that they wanted translated into the Pampanga space were gratitude and openness, as reflected in the use of an open layout, natural light, and a deep integration with the natural environment around them.

From the home’s exterior, guests are treated to a balance of solidity and softness. The façade, clad in textured stone and framed with warm wooden slats, creates striking visual tension with its balance of endurance and warmth. Generous overhangs and strategically placed lighting add drama at dusk, while landscaped stepping stones provide a grounding, meditative approach to the family and friends who enter. Prime local materials are used throughout the space, most notably natural Mactan wood that showcases Pampanga’s finest craftsmanship.

Stepping inside the home, one is greeted by a seamless flow between the living room, dining room, and kitchen space, all featuring a dynamic interplay of natural light throughout the day. A warm timber ceiling stretches across the room, enhancing the grandness of the space while tying each element together.
Contemporary lighting fixtures highlight the refined simplicity of the interiors. Meanwhile, furnishings in soft creams and rich wood tones turn the space into a sanctuary after a bustling day in the city. “Each item was placed with intention, creating a rhythm that allows the interiors to breathe and ensuring a natural harmony between furniture, structure, and light,” shared the architect.

What sets this home apart is its open courtyard, which anchors the space while creating an evolving dialogue with the natural world. With its clean architectural lines and glass framing, the space dissolves the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors.
The homeowners are fond of exploring their lush surroundings, each stone paver setting the stage for meditation. “The textures of the courtyard play a crucial role with lush grass, rugged rocks, and fine gravel weaving together a tactile contrast against the smooth façade,” shared the architect. The result infuses geometric precision with the organic rhythms of daily life in Pampanga.

Moving into the private quarters, the space takes an even more reflective turn. The chevron-patterned wood feature wall adds unexpected dimension to the space, its subtle backlighting creating a retreat for the homeowners. Plush upholstered seating and textiles in neutral shades add continuity with the home’s design story, enveloping the space in comfort. The sheer drapery allows sunlight to permeate the space, with breathtaking sunsets turning the room into a palette of vibrant colour.
“Every corner of this home reflects a commitment to modern tropical living,” mused Architect Garcia. “We never wanted to lose sight of the warmth and intimacy in the home. It is architecture that feels alive, both sophisticated and deeply personal.”

Sustainability was of the utmost importance, both in terms of the climate and the homeowners’ needs. The Pampanga home’s airy layout ensures that cross-ventilation can take place, which is particularly helpful amid the Philippines’ humidity and rainfall later in the year.
At the same time, the Alabaster home will serve as a companion through this new phase in the homeowners’ lives. “It’s not just a shelter; it carries meaning beyond its walls,” said the architect. “Like the stone it is named after, alabaster, the home reflects a quiet strength, resilience shaped by gentleness, and beauty revealed in stillness and simplicity.”
