Creating a serene atmosphere for a multigenerational family in Hyderabad, India, Studio Nilasha reinterprets the Danish hygge concept and elements of Japanese gardens for a modern Indian context

In the heart of Hyderabad, India, stands a 6,020-square-foot residence that prioritises enveloping curves over harsh angles. Focusing on building an atmosphere of restoration over the rush of modern living, Studio Nilasha has created a multigenerational home that will withstand the test of time and the unique needs of each inhabitant.

For the homeowners, the primary brief was to create a home that felt like a warm embrace. Blending elements of Danish hygge and Japanese zen were key elements in bringing this Hyderabad home to life. At the same time, such a fusion reflects the homeowners’ personalities. One individual grew up with dreams of incorporating Scandinavian minimalism in their future home. Meanwhile, the other embodied a sensitivity to ease and functionality. Together, they imagined a sanctuary above the bustle of city life yet connected to a sprawling family dwelling on lower floors.

From the beginning of the project, one radical idea defined Studio Nilasha’s design: a home without corners. “The clients were open to spatial experimentation, which allowed us to rethink junctions, thresholds and even the idea of what a corner should be,” reflected the design principal. As such, she was able to shape the shell itself: carving niches, making cut-outs, adding curves where walls might have ended abruptly, lifting ceiling and window heights so daylight could flood into the home.

The residence unfolds in two distinct moods. The primary wing is serene and pared back, a cocoon for everyday rituals to unfold. The rest of this multigenerational home opens itself to gatherings with marble floors, acoustic treatments, and an outdoor bar, representing a bolder approach that is calibrated for social gatherings.

The foyer introduces the design language immediately through a sculpted partition wall with cane accents from Cane Concept, inviting guests to explore the soothing hues and textures of the home. At the centre, the main living space is anchored by a zen-inspired courtyard. Oak floors ground the interiors, while concealed cove lights in the barrel-vaulted ceiling create a gentle illumination as the evening goes on. Deceptively simple, such a lighting solution required extraordinary technical coordination. "The lighting could not simply run in straight lines; they had to bend and taper with the geometry,” Nilasha explained. “Cove details were redrawn repeatedly so illumination would wash curved ceilings evenly.”

The living room’s furniture became an extension of the architecture. Nilasha even sourced a sectional sofa whose forms echoed the room’s geometries. But when no centre table could be found to complement it, she hand-drew the design at full scale on site. The resulting custom coffee table, fabricated in Kashmiri walnut wood, sits low on the floor and reinforces the sense of intimacy in the living room.

Echoing the traditional Japanese shoji screens, a glass partition delineates the space’s boundaries. Nearby, there are sculptural lighting fixtures and an accent chair by Wicker Story that add texture and depth, the artisanal quality of each piece adding rustic charm. Adjacent to the space are the kitchen and dining, which were reimagined as a continuous social zone. The dining table extends organically from the kitchen island to minimise the transition time between soothing daily rituals.

One of the home’s most notable design moments arose from a spontaneous on-site decision. Originally planned as an extra bedroom, the study was transformed by Nilasha into a library and home office, featuring a perfectly round window. This circular aperture frames the zen garden and living room beyond, bringing daylight in whilst connecting spaces through its choreographed view.

The courtyard itself transports a Japanese zen garden into a modern Indian home, featuring traditional elements like the karesansui, the raked sand patterns that turn maintenance into meditation. Between circulation spaces, a pebbled corner punctuates the corridor with pause and textures, encouraging stillness rather than merely facilitating movement.

Under Nilasha’s watchful eye, each bedroom maintained a distinct identity whilst maintaining the home’s cohesive restraint. The primary suite features a vaulted ceiling with curved rafters, which Nilasha considers one of her favourite elements in the Hyderabad, India home. “It creates enclosure without heaviness and brings subtle architectural drama to an otherwise restrained space,” she remarked.

Meanwhile, the secondary bedroom features a gently carved study nook that mirrors the house's broader aesthetic vocabulary. Supporting the child’s concentration, play and growth, the space can easily accommodate the changes in her interests and hobbies through the years. Nearby, the guest suite centres around a bay window seat, which allows natural light to fall over the room’s distinctive blush tones.

Altogether, this Hyderabad, India home had to work in tandem with the region’s subtropical climate. Longevity was the primary consideration, as seen through the oak flooring and locally-customised fabrics strewn throughout the home. Daylight optimisation also occurs through adjusted window heights and ceiling volumes, which reduce reliance on artificial lighting during daytime hours. Additionally, the courtyard and high ceilings ensure that wind flows freely through the home.

“This home is minimal in nature because it is resolved,” Nilasha shared. “By that, we mean that every line, material transition and finish has been considered until nothing extraneous remains. Minimalism is often misunderstood as subtraction. For us, it is about solving a space so thoroughly that it no longer needs embellishment to feel complete.”
