Kate Sbuttoni, whose style is a fusion of classic elegance and vibrant eclecticism, shows us how thoughtful design transforms a Somerset, England home into a haven that reflects the unique tastes and lifestyles of those who live within its walls

More than a mere physical space, home is a place where we find comfort, express our personalities and foster meaningful experiences. Design plays a crucial role in shaping how a space feels, influencing not only its aesthetics but also its functionality and atmosphere. British business owner and entrepreneur, Kate Sbuttoni prioritises authenticity and storytelling in her designs. “I believe a space is more interesting if as many elements within it tell a story—their history, craftsmanship or provenance,” she says.

Her home holds such stories through its decor which reflects her personality and tastes that are both inviting and deeply personal. The interiors featured in these photographs are a testament to that philosophy, showcasing a home that harmonises elegance with contemporary charm, all while embracing an unmistakable warmth.

From first glance, Sbuttoni’s home exudes a curated, effortless style. The living room, with its built-in bookshelves, printed wallpaper and deep-blue seating, creates a sophisticated yet lived-in environment. The choice of accents—statement lamps, framed pictures and abundance of textiles— adds layers of texture and nostalgia. The overall palette blends warm earth tones with pops of colour, making it a refined and yet welcoming space.

Throughout the home, vintage furniture and antique-inspired details play a central role. The beautifully aged wooden dresser in the hallway serves as a striking focal point, enhanced by the surrounding artwork and family photos. Meanwhile, the kitchen balances tradition with modernity, featuring sage green cupboards, intricate tiled backsplashes and rattan bar stools that evoke a sense of organic warmth. This kitchen is not just a place for cooking—it’s a space for gathering, connecting and making memories. Her home quietly exudes masterful use of pattern and texture.

From the palm tree-themed wallpaper in the bathroom to the intricate prints on throw pillows, every element adds depth and interest. The incorporation of patterned lampshades, bold wall designs and eclectic decor contributes to the inviting and inspiring ambience.

A common factor among the rooms is the light fittings. Sbuttoni believes that lamps are “the cornerstone of a home’s ambience.” Seeing lighting as an integral part of how a space communicates, she says that a well-placed lamp can transform a flat, lifeless interior into a layered, inviting space. By casting soft pools of light, a lamp could highlight the textures and tones of surrounding elements, creating a sense of harmony and warmth.

Whether perched on a console to frame cherished photos or placed in a reading nook for quiet reflection, each lamp is a curated piece of art. “Balance and harmony are key. A lamp should complement the existing decor without overpowering it. If the given space is too busy, the room will appear hectic and create a jarring environment, which is not conducive to a restful interior,” she advises.

Sbuttoni’s ability to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity creates designs that are timeless yet refreshingly modern, appealing to a wide range of tastes through which Kate’s international or multicultural influences undoubtedly shine through. Her years of travel across Asia, Europe and beyond have informed her eclectic style: from incorporating natural materials like rattan to embracing motifs such as bamboo and palm. “Everything I’ve experienced finds a way into my designs,” she shares.

Sbuttoni also imparts that marrying into the Filipino culture has instilled within her an appreciation for craftsmanship, attention to detail and a love for natural materials. She emphasises that artisanal quality and storytelling across cultures have certainly influenced her commitment to creating pieces with depth and meaning.

This home is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can create a space that is both visually stunning and genuinely comfortable. By blending vintage charm, modern convenience and a keen eye for detail, the result is a sanctuary that feels timeless yet fresh. It’s a reminder that great design is not just about trends—it’s about creating a space that reflects who you are and the life you love.
