The powder room itself is just one of many spaces interior design firm Aiden T crafted for the homeowner, who desired an art deco-inspired abode augmented by a sprinkling of Parisian flair, and the inclusion of bold patterns and hues.
Space planning was also a key consideration, with the designer needing to maximise the available floor space as well as incorporate ample storage without causing the home to appear too cramped or overly built-up with carpentry. While the apartment is generous in size, the overarching requirement was to keep it cosy yet vibrant, and perfectly suited to entertaining.
Arjan Nijen Twilhaar, principal designer at Aiden T, looked to legendary entertainer Josephine Baker as one of his sources of inspiration; the groundbreaking Baker embodied the zeitgeist of the Jazz Age and was also among the very first African-American female entertainers in history.
“She was a trailblazer in her own right,” says Nijen Twilhaar. “It was the height of Parisian chic; the early start of the art deco movement, just after the First World War. I wanted to embrace that joy for life and create an apartment where there were hints of a Parisian pied-à-terre, without it being too contrived.” He adds that the abode’s design “arches from the turn of the century to very early mid-century styles”.

The mood is established at the foyer, where two elegant wall sconces and black and white floor tiles channel a bone-fide art deco vibe and create a regal sense of arrival that certainly leaves a lasting impression.
An intricate floral arrangement softens the overall look and adds colour; all the elements combine to create a strong first impression. Practicality plays a key role here too, with the foyer’s extended dimensions and curved walls incorporating concealed storage solutions and also facilitating a more spacious powder room for guests.

In the dining area, an Aiden T bespoke rug sports a quasi-sunburst pattern in black and white tones, echoing the floor tiles in similar hues nearby. The extended kitchen now features a pantry area for extra storage. The double door’s unique pattern adds an art deco touch while a bright yellow island lends a pop of colour.

Elsewhere, the cosy, wallpaper-clad family room makes a dramatic statement with deep brown tones and rich velvet upholstery, and a textural rug. Also of note is the bar area, which features a counter with a gothic-inspired base, yet is still appropriately sleek to maintain the art deco aesthetic.
“Originally a passage, we utilised the space to create another entertaining area,” says Nijen Twilhaar of this zone. Specially customised doors, along with imported wallpaper and a custom-cut tile pattern add to the geometric slant here, while bespoke furniture ensures exclusivity and uniqueness.
Most of the furniture pieces were custom-designed by Aiden T for their respective spaces, as were other fixtures and accessories such as the lighting fixtures and area rugs.

Another standout is the master bedroom, which channels the look of the swanky Ritz Paris hotel. The wall panelling features three different tones and gold trim for an extra dose of pizzazz.
The principal bathroom is a “retreat bathroom”, eschewing a shower area to line the walls with wood panelling. Another bathroom was annexed to the principal suite, serving as a “wet room” with a water closet, shower and vanity.

The seven-month project was completed last year, with Nijen Twilhaar lauding the working chemistry with the homeowner. “I wanted the apartment to feel as if it had been in the family for years, and each generation added some pieces,” he sums up. “The objective was to create a cosy space: not too contrived, and not too minimalist.”
