Studio Kanta has crafted a sprawling penthouse sanctuary in Kuala Lumpur, highlighted by an infinity pool

Nestled in the cosmopolitan neighbourhood of Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur, a sleek Sunway Palazzio penthouse embodies the best of urban living with a private pool and a killer view. This three-story sanctuary, spanning an impressive 9,900 sq ft, was the work of Studio Kanta, who had been entrusted with the project by a returning client when he acquired his new property.

“We had previously designed his apartment at The Stories, Taman Tunku, after he returned from Shanghai,” explains Suekmei Chai, director and founder of Studio Kanta. “For this penthouse, we designed this space with a focus on clean, crisp, and chic elements.  Our aim was to create a subtle, luxurious ambience that would resonate with the client’s sophisticated taste.”

The penthouse comprises boasts five bedrooms, a study room, a gym, and six bathrooms.

This existing layout underwent significant renovations as Chai recounts how they needed to break down a few walls to ensure a seamless blend of functionality with elegance. “The client trusted us with artistic freedom, and that respect throughout the design process was invaluable,” Chai adds.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a striking entrance console crafted by local artisans from Fiske. It features ribboned wood doors that hint at the exquisite detailing to come.

“Shadow gaps and recessed patterns throughout the space create visual depth and interest,” Chai notes, referring to the curved lift lobby wall that mirrors the entrance door’s fluidity.

The heart of the home is undoubtedly the dining area, where a locally made, black-and-white oak table by Craftsmanty takes centre stage, accompanied by chairs from the same artisan.

Chai muses, “This area ties everything together beautifully—the Liew Kwai Fei artwork, the Kooij recycled plastic pendant lights, and the silver travertine bar.” Vintage artworks sourced from local shops add character and individuality to the space.

Natural stones and timber infuse the space with warmth and texture, while mossy green glazed tiles celebrate the double-volumed pillar, guiding the eye across the floors.

“We intentionally used natural materials to decorate the space with their colours and patterns,” Chai explains. “Their varying textures create a tactile, multi-sensory experience.”

Perhaps the crowning jewel of this urban oasis is the infinity pool, which offers breathtaking views of the Kuala Lumpur skyline.

“We revamped the entire pool area, which included installing custom tiles imported from Spain,” Chai shares. The result is a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living.

Throughout the design process, Chai and her team faced challenges, such as manoeuvring large pieces like the massive 10-seater dining table, which was strategically planned and assembled on-site with brass inserts.

“It was a logistical puzzle, but one that we solved through careful planning and execution,” she adds.

“One of my favourite aspects of this project was the opportunity to collaborate with local suppliers and craftsmen,” Chai reflects. “It allowed us to create truly unique, custom pieces that elevate the space to new heights and celebrate the talents of our local artisans."
