Paying homage to Moscow’s illustrious history, Inna Zavyalova and the ADDburo team transform this heritage home into a family’s elegant haven

Amid the demands of a busy lifestyle, one’s home can be a haven for self-expression and tranquillity. This timeless home in Moscow blends elements of old-world architecture with theatrical layers, creating a family abode that will stand the test of time.

Situated in Moscow's historic central district, Inna Zavyalova and the ADDburo team wanted to highlight the early 19th-century home’s heritage while equipping it with modern conveniences.  “We aimed to preserve the architectural integrity of the exterior while completely reimagining the interior,” shared Inna Zavyalova. On the outside, the home reflects the city’s classical style. On the inside, the house has been fully renovated to suit the needs of an entrepreneur and his family.

What immediately stands out is the home's colour palette: the elegant blend of soft neutrals and deep blues is complemented by a wide range of textures. Upon entering the living room, one is transfixed by the different materials working in harmony.

The marble fireplace grounds the space in its historical origins, complemented by the brass mirror sourced from a local antique shop. The custom-made couches are clad in soothing blues, facing a brass coffee table that adds an air of opulence. “These materials were chosen for their durability, timeless appeal and capacity to add warmth and texture,” shared Zavyalova. “They resulted in a balanced environment.”

Of particular interest in the home are the lighting fixtures. “It was an interesting challenge to vintage lighting fixtures that would harmonise with the modern design while honouring the building’s rich history,” explained Zavyalova. “After an extensive search, we discovered the ideal pieces in a European antique market. These fixtures blend seamlessly with the contemporary elements and infuse the living spaces with a distinctive character, bridging the past and present beautifully.”

Another prominent feature in the home is the art collection, which includes masterpieces by Pavel Pepperstein, Valeriy Koshlyakov, Semyon Faibisovich and Ivan Chuikov.

“Our approach was to ensure that each artwork would not only stand as a masterpiece on its own but also resonate with the architectural and design elements of the space,” said Zavyalova. “While the design was not built around these specific pieces, they were chosen early on to complement and elevate the overall aesthetic.” ADDburo worked with French specialists to find unique pieces that reflect the homeowners’ desire for an understated yet opulent home.

The result is a thoughtful curation, as seen in the home’s study. The vibrant colours and playful textures contrast deeply with the exquisite wood detailing, which was custom-designed by Zavyalova’s team for this home. The jewel-toned couch balances the fiery elements of the painting, while the carpet features hypnotic details that evoke images of an island getaway.

The walls also feature detailed plaster elements through the cornices and wall panels, which the team crafted to pay homage to the house’s two centuries of history. “By designing these elements in-house, we ensure each piece fits the architectural context and contributes to the aesthetic,” said Zavyalova. “Whether it’s custom storage or intricate panelling, we blur the lines between form and function, tailoring each space to the client’s needs with a consistent design language.”

Travelling to the family’s private quarters, one is immediately immersed in a textural wonderland. They feature the same intricate cornices and panelling as the rooms downstairs but with a neutral palette to accommodate the children’s personalities as they grow. The bedrooms are a masterclass in thoughtful details, with playful bedspreads that feature insects, contrasting with a rich wooden headboard.

The other bedrooms feature alcoves that add unexpected depth to the space, creating a cosy atmosphere that aligns with the home’s overall design philosophy. The result is a space that remains deeply rooted in the past while embracing what the future holds.
