Explore how Bilal Rehman Studio infused this Houston, Texas cottage with Indian heritage and contemporary flair

Nestled in the heart of Bunker Hill Village, Texas, interior designer Bilal Rehman has infused a traditional cottage-style residence with unexpected edge. “When I first stepped into the Bunker Hill residence, I knew instantly it was a unique property,” says Rehman. “What struck me was the volume, the height of the ceilings, the generous scale of each room, and the way the light moved across the walls throughout the day.”

Each corner felt cinematic in its own right; it was just waiting for some refinement before it reached its full potential. Now, the Bunker Hill, Texas home has been transformed into what Rehman calls a “layered portrait of culture, identity and elevated design,” setting the groundwork for beautiful memories ahead.

The renovation of this Texas home began with clients who possessed a clear vision for their space. They wanted the home to reflect their dynamic personalities and cultural heritage, all while incorporating their appreciation for fashion. The design brief was direct: create cohesion through unexpected pairings of materials and textures, and weave in references to the clients' Indian heritage in a way that felt fresh, modern and deeply personal—all without compromising the original architecture of the home. The approach was methodical and intentional. “Curated artwork—much of it selected in collaboration with the clients from their own archive—features subtle nods to Indian iconography, pattern and form.”

Bilal Rehman Studio’s philosophy challenges conventional open-concept design trends. “While it can offer visual flow, it often comes at the cost of depth and emotional impact,” Rehman explains. “When rooms lack clear boundaries, you lose the opportunity to create distinct environments, those spaces that serve specific purposes and evoke specific feelings.”

The Bunker Hill residence offered an architectural layout that perfectly aligned with this approach, maintaining natural flow while allowing each room to stand independently while contributing to a deep sense of cohesion. From the entryway, soaring ceilings and a custom curved staircase create immediate scale and intention. The formal dining room, framed by a large picture window, floods with natural light. A vintage artefact from Sotheby’s, now mounted in a custom iron frame, anchors a niche across from the dining room. Just beyond, a vintage Chanel scarf hangs above the sleek Paramount Sideboard by Cattelan Italia, which Rehman calls “a striking blend of fashion, history and quiet opulence.”

The formal living room opens as the home’s crown jewel, fully wrapped in hand-applied Venetian plaster that softens light and adds dimensional depth. At its centre sits the original double-sided fireplace, carefully restored to serve as both focal point and connector between the living room and adjoining family space.

But the true heart of the home resides in the 800-year-old Indian tapestry has been meticulously restored and mounted within a custom acrylic case. “It doesn’t just draw the eye, it holds it," enthuses Rehman. “More than a showpiece, it's a symbol of lineage, intention and reverence.”

Another one of the Texas home’s most distinctive elements is the custom Oyster Marble coffee table, a sculptural statement designed by Bilal Rehman Studio and brought to life through Rehman Home. “The design was born during a late-night sketching session, when my team and I realised that nothing on the market truly captured the feeling we envisioned for the space. So we decided to create it ourselves,” Rehman recalls. The resulting piece embodies Bilal Rehman Studio's design philosophy, balancing elegance and functionality.

Equally meaningful is the 100-year-old Steinway grand piano that anchors the formal living room. Sourced through a specialised piano dealer, the instrument “holds emotional weight, quite literally a soulful presence within the home,” Rehman shares. “Today, it’s become a living heirloom, with each of the family’s children learning to play on its keys, weaving new memories into its legacy.”

This integration of cultural elements made the project deeply meaningful to Rehman. “I had the room to push boundaries, but the homeowners were equally involved in bringing in their cultural heritage, their way of living and their vision for the space,” he says. “That kind of partnership is where the real alchemy happens. The result isn't just beautiful: it’s personal, layered and lasting.”

The design approach prioritised preservation over replacement wherever possible. Rehman explains: “I wanted to preserve as much of the original property as possible. At our studio, we don’t believe in unnecessary waste, so the existing European hardwood floors, original to the house, were restored, repaired and stained in a rich espresso tone.”

The team retained the double-sided fireplace, kept the original kitchen flooring intact and incorporated vintage furnishings throughout. Original mouldings and trim work were preserved, and in the formal living room, additional moulding in the same style was introduced to add architectural depth while maintaining historical continuity.

Inspired by the clients’ deep love for the Hamptons, the backyard was designed as an extension of the home’s interior. Here lies a serene oasis where every detail has been considered. “From the palette of sun-washed neutrals to the curated materiality, each piece reflects the same fashion-forward sensibility that defines the rest of the residence,” says Rehman. The renovation extended to the family pool, encasing it in large-format porcelain slabs that echo the stone surfaces used in the home’s kitchen. The result is a tonal harmony that blends with the rest of the home, creating a seamless flow between the indoors and the outdoors.

At its core, this Bunker Hill, Texas residence exemplifies Rehman’s fundamental design principle: to infuse design with conviction. “I want every space I touch to leave an impression, whether it’s elegance, nostalgia, intimacy or energy,” shares the designer. “This home allowed me to do exactly that, with clarity and without compromise.”

At the same time, Rehman is amazed to see the home take on a life of its own. After the renovation, the homeowners have settled more into their new space. “We’ve seen the space naturally evolve with the addition of deeply personal touches such as family photos, cherished collectables, and meaningful objects that reflect their story,” he says. “While the design already incorporated culturally significant and sentimental pieces, these additions have layered the home with even more soul and authenticity.”
