Blending influences from the French Alps and the work of painter Peter Doig, Cari Giannoulias has created an eclectic, comforting family abode in Utah for all seasons

For lifelong outdoor enthusiasts, their dream home is not only architecturally sound but deeply immersed in nature. Deep within the Jordanelle Basin of Utah stands such a home, which blends access to the alpine peaks with a tranquil atmosphere. Misty mornings soften the towering mountains, creating picturesque views from the 4,500-square-foot residence designed by Cari Giannoulias.

From horseback riding and mountain biking in the summer to skiing in the winter, the house sits at the centre of a year-round immersion in adventure. Such a lifestyle is possible as the Utah home sits at the intersection of the summer trails and winter slopes. Yet at the end of the day, Giannoulias has created a sanctuary for the family to unwind after a long day of outdoor activities.

The foyer is guests’ first glimpse of the Utah home’s distinct design story. Here, a custom bench upholstered in Pierre Frey fabric sits beside a custom console table, while a French perforated iron table by Mathieu Matégot from Panoplie introduces a note of mid-century European precision. Andrew Alba’s Pink Daffodil brings the first hit of colour, before drawing one’s eye to the nearby alpine views. The floor tile, by The Fine Line, runs through into the adjacent pantry, where a custom millwork design by Giannoulias houses an 1840 antique elm side table from Amber Interiors and a Windsor metal chair by Nickey Kehoe.

Giannoulias drew inspiration from Le Coucou Méribel in the French Alps, an eclectic yet elevated skiing destination, as well as the work of painter Peter Doig, whose unapologetic, mesmerising use of colour pushed the designer outside her comfort zone. “I don’t usually work with tones this rich, but that was part of the appeal. It became a challenge I was excited to take on.” To further enhance the atmosphere, she wanted to prioritise furniture that evoked images of a grandmother’s country home. Prioritising pieces with classic shapes and comforting textiles was the clear way to go.

Peter Doig’s influence is felt most prominently in the main living room, where a custom fireplace, corduroy sofa and slope yellow chairs by the designer take centre stage. Other furniture pieces like the Shuffle Table by Mia Homber and a metal side table add visual contrast to these organic shapes, while a Tibetano rug underfoot softens the space further. The distinctive textiles in the space carve out pockets of conversation among family and friends, particularly as the holiday season approaches.

The most-used room of the Utah home is the kitchen, where Giannoulias’s custom millwork presents a continuation of the rest of the home. Luteca counter stools line the island, gently illuminated by  Allied Maker Pinnacle sconces. For a pop of colour, an antique blue trunk from Tori Jones Studio stands alongside a Cassina Ficulpa table lamp and vases by Natalie Garza.

Moving onto the dining area, the custom dining table is surrounded by Daumiller chairs sourced through Nickey Kehoe, with a custom dining banquette also by the designer. Above, a Charlotte Perriand art light softly frames Justin Wheatley’s artwork The Winter Settled In, which further hearkens back to the alpine environment. Scattered across the table are ceramic cups and plates by Tamara Bryan, reflecting the family’s love for sharing meals.

The more private areas of the home reflect a deeper, more intuitive palette. A custom bed and custom lounge chair by Giannoulias anchor the room, paired with vintage 1930s nightstands sourced from Chairish. Hanging above the space is a Ruemmler pendant, while Vera sconces by In Common With provide the perfect bedside light to bask in. Nearby, the fireplace also makes a cosy vignette, with a Loloi rug grounding the space underfoot and Eddie Powell’s Mustard Mountains from Chairish on the wall.

Next door is the primary bathroom, with a custom cabinet and mirror designed by Giannoulias to further enhance the serene atmosphere. A copper tub stands at the heart of the space, with a fluted pendant and a brass table nearby completing the metallic vignette.

Returning to the lower level of the Utah home, the movie room is cocooned in custom millwork and furniture by Giannoulias. A Clam Chair from Eternity Modern provides a sculptural seating option, while Lumfardo sconces and a Caprani lamp maintain the cinematic climate.

The bar, anchored by Allied Maker pendants and a Tibetano rug, continues the lower level's relaxed register. A Blatt Billiards pool table occupies the adjacent room beneath a Vibia pendant and Human Home sconces, with Lawson Fenning barstools and a Chris Riccardo artwork completing the room.

Altogether, the home feels deeply attuned to the rhythms of the homeowners’ daily lives together. Throughout the year, there is no shortage of activities and spots in which to relax after they’re through, ensuring that the space will continue to grow with the clients over time.
