Cover Founders of Sunday Bedding, Alex Fan and Clara Teo

Ethical, sustainable and frequently sold-out Sunday Bedding is the brainchild of Alex Fan and Clara Teo whose chic brand is as easy as the Sunday morning

Good bed linen is a simple way to add a touch of luxury and comfort to our every day lives. But what exactly constitutes good? Founders of Sunday Bedding, Alex Fan and Clara Teo, have come up with the answer that ticks all the boxes with well-made bed linen that look and feel wonderful against the skin—and are sustainable to boot.

The Singapore-based couple began their brand about three years ago when they were shopping for their new home. They soon realised how easy it was to get lost in the jargons like ‘thread count’ and ‘weave’ without understanding how these things affect how we sleep. From there, the idea of creating a brand to dispel the myths around bedsheets was born.

Incidentally, Fan's family has been in the home textile manufacturing for over three decades, so his deep merchandising experience and expertise really helped the couple find and hone their niche. This advantage also meant they would have the manufacturing capability to explore different materials to address various sleeping needs.

Today, Sunday Bedding regularly sells out from their Singapore stockist and online (they ship internationally), with its French Linen and Bamboo Sateen ranges beloved for their effortless elegance. Tatler speaks to Teo to discover what makes the brand tick.

What sets Sunday Bedding apart?

Teo: As an independent regional brand, our bed linen are adapted for the local market. We understand that everyone sleeps differently and we have the manufacturing capability and experience to address different sleeping needs. In fact, our product range was designed specifically for the hot & humid climate in our region.

We specifically selected Bamboo sheets as they are moisture-wicking, cool-to-touch and hold up well to washing. Our duvet inserts are filled with TENCEL fibres instead of polyester or down so that it is thinner and lighter than most inserts. It also allows the duvet to achieve a level of softness without retaining excessive heat.

As an independent brand, our customers are also very much part of our journey and we listen to feedback closely. For instance, we conduct regular Instagram and email polls to decide what new colours and products to launch. We iterate on our product based on feedback as well, for example, we recently added 8 strings to our duvet covers in our newest production batch based on our feedback.

Your linen regularly sells out. What are the most popular sheets?

Teo: Our most popular sheets are our Bamboo Sateen sheets They’re well loved by our customers as they are moisture-wicking and cooling, so they’re well-suited for the climate here.

Aside from the materials, our customers also love our prints and colours. Our prints also do especially well and are our key differentiation. While most bedding brands have traditional prints or patterns that are repeated across the sheets, we utilise digital printing on the bamboo sheets to create more contemporary and minimalistic designs. These prints are designed to fit in most homes, no matter what your colour palette or style is.

Finally, even for our solid colours, we put in a lot of thought and effort into getting the colours of our sheets in the right shade. Due to the sheen on bamboo sateen sheets and variations that occur during the dyeing process, it can be quite difficult to translate a colour you had in mind to the final product. Each solid colour that we launch goes through a multi-stage sampling process.

What do you sleep on?

I used to sleep on the bamboo sheets, but I’ve recently become a fan of the French Linen sheets. I am currently using the Dusty Plum in French Linen. Linen sheets have such a cosy, rumpled look so there’s no need to iron them as the wrinkles are part of linen’s charm.

Linen sheets are also super durable and do not trap dust as easily as cotton, which is helpful since our two cats sleep with us. The natural, textural feel of linen is a plus point for us as it feels like a mini-massage on our skin too.

How do you practise sustainability, transparency and corporate responsibility, and why is it important?

Fabric can be categorised broadly into three categories: synthetic fibres (polyester), natural fibres (cotton, linen) and regenerated fibres from plant fibres (TENCEL, bamboo).  With 90 per cent of textiles demand in cotton or polyester, we believe that textiles diversity is the key to a more sustainable textile economy. By developing a sustainable brand like Sunday Bedding, we hope to be part of a movement to shift the demand toward alternative fabrics.

We use only 100 per cent natural fibres like French Linen and regenerative fibres like Bamboo which tend to come at a slight premium. The Bamboo Sateen bed sheets are derived from bamboo which grows really quickly and thus generates a net carbon negative footprint during the growing process. On the other hand, French Linen is an incredibly durable fabric that can last 10 years or more and gets softer with each wash.

Having a transparent production chain is important to us as ultimately, we strongly believe that sustainability is not simply slapping on a label  but also about achieving efficiency and a reduction in consumption across the entire manufacturing process.

As part of our commitment to producing ethically and sustainably. Our sheets are made in Alex’s family factories which are Made in Green by Oeko Text-certified, the most demanding certification that guarantees that any article bearing its mark contains no harmful substances and has been manufactured respecting the environment and workers’ human rights.

In addition our bedding factories have committed to a seven to eight per cent annual reduction in water and energy consumption, and all water released from our manufacturing process is completely potable.

We also see self-care as the destination and rest as part of the journey to a person’s overall wellbeing. Instead of simply selling a product, we work closely with local personalities to inspire our customers to live well. For instance, we recently collaborated with Kuantan-based Emma Richardson, a mom of two, on a feature about how to live sustainably.

In addition, we constantly look out for innovative materials that are also sustainable. We're currently in the early stages of exploring fibre-dyed bamboo sheets which means that the fibres are pre-dyed before being spun together. This reduces chemical dye consumption and also creates a lovely gradient effect on the sheets. We are also exploring incorporating hemp fabric, a sustainable textile made of fibres from a high-yielding crop.

Is the product line more classic or trend driven? Are there trends?

We intentionally avoid trends as we want to encourage mindful consumption.

In terms of colours and design, we focus on producing classic sheets that eschew trends and last long time. Our palette of solid colours incorporate neutrals that make it easy for customers to mix and match with their existing bedroom set up. Additionally, our designs are also minimalistic and easy to style. We love incorporating reversible duvet covers so that customers can create two different looks with one sheet set.

What can we expect next?

While bedding will always remain our core products, we've already started expanding into new product lines such as towels and duvet inserts. We're launching a core loungewear collection at the end  of 2021 There's also a plan to expand into other product categories, for example throw blankets, pillow shams, and bath rugs.

Ultimately, we aim to help our customers weave in moments of respite, that familiar Sunday feeling into their daily lives.
