Danish brand Louis Poulsen is brightening up spaces one lamp at a time. Here's how they do it

If home is where the heart is, then it should be lit with eclectic and innovative lighting systems such as the ones offered by award-winning brand Louis Poulsen. The Danish brand, which has finally found its way to the Philippines, creates welcoming atmospheres indoors and outdoors by forming soothing pools of light.

The brand has always produced decorative, architectural, and outdoor lights inspired by the Danish concept and cultural marker hygge which means homeliness, coziness, and warmth. While most architects and designers see working with light as a simple task, Louis Poulsen's vision has always been to go beyond what the world of design has already seen.

History

Louis Poulsen was initially founded as a wine importer in 1874. In 1924, however, the brand became one of the most influential lighting companies when Danish architect, designer, and inventor Poul Henningsen approached the brand with an idea for 'PH,' a light he wanted to present at the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes.

The PH collection has become one of Louis Poulsen's most beloved and iconic collections to date. Henningsen’s development of the PH lamps and the three-shade-system defined the principles of glare-free comfortable lighting. Furthermore, it highlighted the three main parameters most prevalent in the brand’s creations: function, comfort, and ambience.

The PH concept won the Paris Exposition in 1925 and the very next year, together with Louis Poulsen, Henningsen was tasked with lighting the Forum Building in Copenhagen, where the first PH pendant lights were debuted to much critical success.

In 2011 Louis Poulsen became the first lighting manufacturer to win the American Institute of Architects award for ‘Collaborative Achievement’ because of the brand’s ambitious partnerships and never-ending quest for lighting excellence.

The list of prestigious designers the brand has worked with also expanded to cover the most respected names in the design world: Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, Vilhelm Lauritzen, Øivind Slaatto, Christian Flindt, Oki Sato, Louise Campbell, GamFratesi, Clara von Zweigbergk, and more.

PH Collection by Poul Henningsen

An icon of innovative lighting design, Poul Henningsen’s three-shade PH lamp has grown many variations. First launched in 1926, the PH 2/1 Pendant was designed based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system that directs the majority of the light downwards.

Henningsen also created different versions of the PH 2/1 lamp - varying in size, colours, and function. The PH 3 ½ - 3 pendant, based on Henningsen's original drawings from the late 1920s and early 1930s, boasts slightly bigger layers. Designed in 1926, the PH 3½ - 2½ is available as floor and table lamps too.

Meanwhile, one of Henningsen’s most recognised forms, the PH 5 pendant, was created in 1958 to address a period where bulb manufacturers constantly changed their shapes and sizes. With the PH 5, the pendant retains functionality and remains glare-free irrespective of how the light is installed or the type of light source used.

Through the years, Danish lighting brand Louis Poulsen has proven that having sophisticated and functional lights is not just a necessity, but an art form, a science, and an industry.
