Proudly Malaysian, each artisanal furniture piece from NicChris tells a story of sublime craftsmanship

Local artisanal brand, NicChris, celebrates craftmanship in every step of the furniture making process. Starting from material selection all the way to finishing, each part is thoughtfully considered to ensure the best outcome.

Selecting the correct raw material is crucial as the right material increases the strength of the piece while enhancing its comfort. Ash is a popular choice as it has a contrasting colour when stained and distinct straight grains with open pores. Its good looks also belie its durability, weight, and good shock resistance. For those reasons, ash is often used in constructing bentwood chairs.

Oak with its strength, versatility and striking grain pattern when stained, is often used for panelling, veneers, and solid wood furniture. Once the material is chosen, NicChris craftsmen use traditional tools to construct the piece. They employ traditional tools and techniques such as the mortise and tenon joint which connects two pieces of wood without nails. Woodworkers around the world have used this technique since ancient Egypt, because of its sheer mechanical strength.

When finishing pieces, quality is prioritised over quantity. Each piece is carefully sanded as this is the most important process of the entire finishing process. If the surface has any trace of roughness, the stain and finish will only emphasise all the bad points. Staining comes next which can enhance the natural beauty of wood but evenness is crucial in this step. After staining, a finish is applied which ranges from high-gloss to low-gloss. At NicChris, the craftsmen ensure that finishing is applied on the entire piece even on the back and underside, to reduce the chances of swelling or shrinking.

From conception to the final flourish, each piece of the NicChris collection tells a story of craftsmanship and their pieces can now be found in residential, commercial and hospitality projects. The story of NicChris does not stop at each finished product but is the beginning of the new ones of many local designers who work hand-in-hand to create each product.
